Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

This might have been answered elsewhere but....

Can I upgrade (for the £25 offer) from a Windows 7 OEM license (purchased from OCUK)?

I also have another PC in the house with an OEM license can that get the same offer?

Thanks

James

Yes it has in this thread, yes to the upgrade and yes to getting the same offer on the other PC (providing it's XP, Vista or 7) :)

Curious which games you are having problems with?

I was wondering this too. Nearly all the games I play are Steam ones and the only ones I couldn't get to work were the ones the use Games for Windows. I expect that this will be fixed, if it is problem at all, with the release version we are getting this month.

The only game I have had problems with is Company of Hero's that runs in a window for some reason?

It often did that on Windows 7 for me too :) But I can confirm that CoH works and plays flawlessly on Windows 8.

Try ALT+ENTER and it should go fullscreen, or check that you haven't got it set to windowed in the settings.

You never replied to your other thread on this, what games are you suffering problems with Prescott? The GFWL fix I've mentioned works on most for me, but if you can give specifics I can see if I have the same games and same problems :)

Tried and checked still no luck, I am not too bothered as its an old game, though I did notice the demo of the new UFO game was in window mode, but could be the ATI driver or something.

Will worry about it once I have bought the full retail version

Whoops, sorry.

I had been trying to run "Sleeping Dogs", "Dead Rising 2, Off the record" and "L A Noire" none of these would work in the Release Preview I was trying. I downloaded Microsoft Flight so the GFW ought to have been the most recent.

I am back on Windows 7 at present - after all its only 3 weeks or so until we get the release of Windows 8 so I was hoping Steam might have sorted things in time for the release.I'd be grateful for any advice, though.

Maybe I am shooting myself in the foot, but I haven't even tried Windows 8 yet lol.:)

Not having Start Menu is kinda putting me off, maybe I should just jump in, I've managed to errr'm find a UK version of Windows 8 RTM... I could always activate it once I bought it come October 25th.

Their is a list of games not compatable here, not sure how good the list is >> http://www.hardcore-games.tk/wp/old-games-no-win8.php

Anyone got LA Noire? See if that works, if possible?

No problem :)

I have Sleeping Dogs, but not the others, and that works fine. Didn't know it was GFWL!

When you downloaded MS Flight, did you run it and sign in? That's worked for me, but on the previous builds I did the manual GFWL install and that worked too (though I didn't do the uninstalls first).

I'm on the RTM now so that might be some of it...might be worth resurrecting your other thread when you get the final version and help one another with issues/workarounds. Everything seems to get lost pretty quick in this thread :)

If it's an unknown source I'd be tempted to either try the Enterprise Trial or just wait. Without frigging it you need to enter the 8 or 8 pro key at install anyway.

That list isn't accurate, I know some of them work though don't have them all. Though I suspect some of them are on there because they need a GFWL manual install to work.

Damn, so in other words their is no 30 day activation period like Windows 7?

Not unless you modify the installer, as it uses the key during install to decide which version of Win8/8Pro and feature set are enabled.
Oh! I don't like that at all lol, so no early access for me anyway, I'll have to just source it when it's released on 25th Oct then, thanks for the info.

Although I use Chrome as my default browser, it's the only thing I hate about Chrome, for downloading large files I just use Firefox, Internet Download Manager is good as well for an accelerator.

Their maybe be a decent Chrome Download Manager extension out there, I never bothered to look.

Well after my stupid mistake yesterday of closing chrome before it had finished downloading (having waited over an hour to download it) I've now had fibre installed downloaded the iso in 14 min and i'm running Windows 8 now :-)
