Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

The most important question that the majority of people who work day-in day-out with Windows will ask is 'can this work in an office'. From what I've seen (I've only played with the Dev Preview) I can confidentally say 'No'.

M.

Of course it can, desktop is still there and you don't have to use metro. ATM I'm on developer previe and due t lack of apps. The onl time I see metro is loging on and logging off. Windws8 is far more than use metro and has a hole host of usefull features.

Companies on top of that are really starting to use tablets productively. So having same platform with "minor" tweaks between apps that run on all devices is a massive plus.

but I want my run of the mill UI I've been used to, do whatever elsewhere =/.

...Yet the same old UI is still there. It's called "the desktop". And who even uses the Start menu these days?? The only thing it's good for is Search, and thats already way better in Metro.

I played with the Developer Preview, for about an hour and went back to 7.
They've played with it enough for it to stand a chance with keyboard and mouse. They need to fix charms but they're close.

Let's be honest thought most business's are using XP and Office 2000 still. They didn't upgrade to 7 and certainly wouldn't have upgraded to 8. Windows 8 is a consumer OS.

For years whether it's been my OCD or whatever I've never used the desktop and it's great to see it so alive.

I always use start. In W7 I have my most used programs pinned to the task bar, have very few items on my desktop at all. A nice background, clock, calendar, date.

I really like the Metro UI look on my phone but I don't think I could get a long with it on my PC.

Hey everyone,

Just hoping for some advice. So I currently have Windows 8 installed in a VM. I would like to try it properly though with all my programs and documents. Whats the easiest way to do this?

Cheers :)

So, can I install this over windows 7 like I can 7 over vista? or is it better to dual boot? Once the preview expires will I then have to reinstall windows 7 if I don't want to buy windows 8?

Turning the netbook back on with the password for Windows Live was... a little annoying. I had no idea what I was meant to be doing, and moving the splash screen with the mouse was meh.

EDIT : I'm not sure why people aren't just straight installing Windows 8 from within Windows 7, then just doing whatever to windows.old :p

Typical comment i've already heard a million times from people like you. You know what the real problem is here? CHANGE. You dont like it because it's new and different.

Is there any problem with that? We have a general interface that has been tried and tested for years. Why does it need changing? Just so Microsoft can have another product to market to people in order to get more money?

Yes, yet Super is challenging your understanding of graph reading :p
And he realised he's failed, I love his fails :p

Shh you, i caught that seconds after i posted it :p
