Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

With metro there's no need for WMC, it's a way to get money from the gullible. Metro is an ideal media centre Ui and when it's released there will be a million and 1 3rd part apps. It also means Ms don't have to pay several £ per windows copy sold for all the licenses.

True, and the TV features of WMC are no longer needed now I have Sky+. Metro is still touchscreen optimised though, whereas my Media PC is used soley with the WMC remote.

If there is a MyMovies Metro app released I will be on it like a shot though. But I am now seriously thinking about something else like a small media streaming box...

I think metro will be very easy to control on a hTPc. I just got myself an android pc on a stick for Netflix and YouTube. Shame it doesn't support iTunes or Zune. But hopfully there'll be a win8 version eventually. I don't do physical media any more. Tv I have virgin. So why have I got a massive pc sat in the lounge. I hope it works well, still waiting for delivery.

Finally got round to installing the preview. Release, but the store always crashes. Get the green load screen for a few seconds, then it flicks back to the metro start screen. Anyone else had this? Or know why/solution.

how did you install Windows 8, Glaucus? Upgrading Windows 7 ought to work but may not. I have a clean install and the store is working fine - we just need something worth downloading!

Most of the online metro apps (mail, store, xbox, photos) crash for me on first opening. But if you click again, they usually work second time.

I just installed Windows 8 Release Preview x64.

Xonar DG Audio Centre app is now partially working. It loads up and you can flick thru the buttons.

The only thing I've seen not working is the volume knob.

Well, I have had to revert to Windows 7 due to programme compatibility issues.

Firstly, I have just started a beta test of some business software and in 8 it wouldn't install but on 7 it worked fine. I could have used my laptop for the test but yesterday bought LA Noire from a Steam sale and that also refused to work on 8. I had trouble getting my home accounts programme registered on 8 as well.

Yesterday I reverted to 7 and guess what? No compatibility problems! I really though 8 was just a bit of a face lift for 7 but it seems that there are some changes enough to stop some programmes in their track. I will now have to rethink my decision to upgrade.

Rockstar have said on their website that none of their games are guaranteed to work on Windows 8 until its released.

It also seems like you are blaming MS for these problems, when its nothing to do with them.

I really don't get all the people saying they will not upgrade to Win 8 on thier desktop. Just hit the desktop tile when your machine boots up, surely no big deal? I cannot believe people are going to miss out on all the new features just because they cannot get thier head around metro.
It's not that simple though, is it?

For example, I'm looking at an email through a desktop email client. Or a web page, MSN window, doesn't matter, you get the idea. Part of that email references a file on my PC. Be it a file name or whatever. Maybe the file name is complicated and I can't remember it, or for whatever reason I need to see the web page as I hit the Windows key to look.

So in Windows 7, a tidy start menu appears in the bottom left hand corner, unobstrusive and as I start typing, the search goes away and brings me my results, all while whatever window I was working on is still there. In Windows 8, the metro screen comes up. What possible use is that? Really? There are loads of other examples, not just this small one.

not at all - I'm not 'blaming' anyone. I am just stuck needing things to run that won't on 8 so I have, for now, reverted to 7. I suspect, though, that some things may never run on 8 but we will have to wait and see.

Guys My mother in law wants me to re-install her laptop which as Vista on it, Should I just install Windows 8 preview or would it cause too many problems? She only uses it for Surfing, Word and Viewing photo's etc.

I put Windows 8 on my nan's and she's been using it for weeks now without problems. I just had to create her a shortcut link on the desktop to shutdown.exe as she couldn't remember how to shut it down.

Well, I've been using Win 8 for a few days now.

I'm not sold on using Metro apps and the desktop together.

  1. Its slower to press the keys to leave the full screen Metro app, and return to the desktop. I spent most of the time flicking between the messenger app and my desktop window. Likewise with the mail app.
  2. The messenger app is treated as a second place on my desktop MSN. Its on my same PC, so I wonder why that is.
