Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I'm happy with Win7 here - will wait for Win9 when they realize not everyone wants that Metro nonsense and give you the option to turn it off. Unless the first service pack introduces it

Just gave it a whirl there - found it ok. Metro does have promise, some of the built in apps are interesting if a little incomplete, but it does feel like they should be allowed to run in desktop windows. I think MS will have to cave on that at some point. The biggest issue is that you can't see/switch between desktop apps in the metro task bar and vice versa. That absolutely has to be fixed.

As an all-device encompassing OS tho, it's not a bad effort at all.

The desktop is just an app now. I don't see why they need to fix it so you can see "apps" (Windows software) within an app. That would be too confusing.

^ 99% of "apps" run in that 'app'. :p

I've finally had a good go on my desktop and wow using Metro UI with a mouse and keyboard is utter ****. I'll be sticking with W7 until they come up with a more suitable/efficient desktop UI solution. (<3 metro on touchscreens)

It's called the standard desktop. It's there! Not hidden and easy to use and easy to stay on the desktop.

Just uploading all my stuff to skydrive probably take best part of 24hours, then I'll cancel Dropbox and finally install the release preview.

Win + Tab brings up the multitasking bar.

Alt + Tab brings up all running apps - Metro or Desktop.

What do you guys think about the aesthetics of Metro and the new mantra "content before chrome" (i.e. less graphical bells and whistles, more of your info displayed).

I'm not sure I like it. If you look at the included apps of mail, calendar, messaging, etc. I think they look horrible and barren. That's the only downside for me. I'd like a bit more chrome like iOS. It's almost harking back to the old DOS days. LOL.

I love it, since owning a smart phone having info displayed without opening the app is a godsend and I've missed that ability on pcs (I know you can mod, but my days off doing that are long gone. I want stuff to work and work great out the box). With pcs/tablets you have even more room to display even more info.
I think just like iPad people won't see the need and resist it, give it 4 years for people to see the reason and warm to the idea and most people will change opinion.

Nearly all home computers are media access and maybe a long email or a bit off office work.

The email client is wicked - love that.
Metro IE has grown on me - I tend to use that over other browsers now.
Messenger is okay I guess. Still prefer the desktop Live Messenger though I do like docking conversations to the side of the screen.
Skydrive and Photos are nice additions but could do with some improvement.
The rest are awful. Music and Xbox especially.

We tried this at work this week and it lasted literally 10mins of laughing and pointing and then it was deleted and we all went back to our happy cosy little Ubuntu desktops. ;) :D

I was the same. With Ubuntu. :D Stupid thing wouldn't even get my desktop resolution right without fannying about with X-server.

I think I'm going to have to evaluate it with TechNet first. I am undecided. ;)

for personal machines, I will be using my technet subscription

As for work, we made the decision to continue the upgrade to W7 with a view to skip W8 and maybe move to Win9 when it is out. 3000 desktops is a massive re-training exercise for us and worryingly for microsoft, our users don't want it, or windows phone.
Our wireless network supports 3000 corporates, and upto 500 guests and I don't think I have ever seen a Windows phone connect to it. We have apple (lots), win7, some XP, lots of Android, a fair few blackberries and a few linux users

All except the IT department of course, we will move to W8 on day of release as there will be no way we would be caught running an outdated OS :D;)

Anyone had problem with rebooting and BIOS not detecting keyboard so stuck on POST screen? Pressing case reset button again and it works fine.

This only happens when perform a reboot from Windows 8.

Using the Release Preview I'm finding Internet Explorer to be a right pain on certain sites, but I think it's due to Flash causing it to crash and enter recovery loop.

Not played around much with Metro, but would like the ability to close apps instead of minimise them. Currently resorting to Task Manager to terminate them.

Why not use Chrome then? It can synch all your settings and so forth and works fine on Windows 8.

Move the mouse cursor to the top of the app, then drag the app to the bottom of the screen to close it. Background Metro apps dont use any CPU cycles at all though, they're basically completely frozen when running in the background, so MS argues that you dont need to close them as they wont affect performance at all.

Win 8 will sync IE10 settings/bookmarks along with other Windows settings (but it wont sync as much IE10 stuff as Chrome syncs).
