Windows 8 is....

:D

I am getting sick of these. We know that some people don't like Windows 8. We also know that some people do. Can we not just leave it at that? I've repeated my gripes enough times, to have people ignore those gripes and not actually just admit, "Yes, an option would have been a good idea at least for the early OSes of the Start Screen."

If Elevon, theheyes, gareth & Glaucus all just agree to that I will stop posting it. ;)
so u being my name in to new thread even when I haven't posted anything before your post.

also why must I agree to something that I don't think is necessary to have a option,

I could say the same thing about win95 - win7, MS should have had a option to make the UI easier for me but other people would say it's not necessary..

Considering the failure of Windows 8 commercially the amount of bashing and whinging towards it is actually quite low.

The vocal minority who have nothing but praise for it and try to suppress all criticism just have to accept that it is not a well liked OS even if they themselves believe it to be utterly perfect, even of the current user base I bet a lot use mods like Startisback and the countless other Metro replacements.

Does Windows 8.1 RTM give you 30 days to activate?

I'll be purchasing it when it's released, otherwise I'll have to install the preview for the time being.

Some people have absolutely no sense of humour. Whatever.

Love it when some people lose a conversation and go, WHATEVER in that certain American way. Then try to play it off with rolls eyes like it means nothing to them.

Yet you say you enjoy winding them up but you can't stick it.

Only thing about Windows 8 was the charm bar on the right, I think it's called that? Never used it and have no idea what it does, can I disable it?

To open programs I do Win + Q and type or open from pinned taskbar or rarely open the start page.
For control panel, bottom left right click

Other than that it's the same as Windows 7.

I don't actively dislike Windows 8, but then I never really liked Windows 7 either, I just tolerated using it. Day-to-day it doesn't really get in my way because I honestly don't do a lot on a PC, I click the Chrome icon pinned to the taskbar, the Remote Desktop icon, or the one for vSphere.

However, it definitely suffers from trying to be a tablet OS and a desktop OS at the same time, and in my opinion it fails at both tasks. I have yet to see a Metro app that does a better job than a desktop equivalent, all you tend to end up with is something that takes up a large amount of screen real estate, hides most of the options behind a menu that appears when you right-click and involves a lot of mouse movement to get things done.

On the tablet front, it's still a full Windows OS, so there are a lot of settings that dump you back to the Desktop UI. I truly believe the push on keyboard covers for the Surface is an admission that Microsoft have failed to deliver a touch-only UI, this is especially true in the case of Office. Now the inclusion of a full desktop and the availability of keyboards might be considered to be giving people more options or result in a more powerful platform, I just think it's a clear sign that it should have spent a bit more time in development. You could make the same observation about Media Center vs something like a TiVo - yes, one is an overlay in front of a full PC operating system and very powerful, but sometimes you just want something that works rather than something that needs fiddling with.

So my opinion of Windows 8 is one of complete apathy, I bought it because it was £15 and I deal with it. It's not terrible, but it's also not very good.

If you ignored the metro stuff and installed a third party start menu, would you still consider Windows 8 a failure as desktop OS?

I don't know to be honest. I can see why MS are pushing Metro so hard, since they need to break the cycle of no Metro apps meaning no tablet sales meaning no Metro app development. I'm just not convinced that shoving it in the face of people who have installed it on a PC with no touch capabilities makes sense.

A Metro app should be an absolute pain to use with a mouse and keyboard, since it's designed for touch. Having them run on PCs to boost the count of devices that can run the apps at best has no effect, at worst you see the backlash that Windows 8 experienced.

I think 8.1 goes some way to address this, it would be improved if it was capable of detecting whether whatever it was being installed on had touch capabilities and defaulting to desktop boot, Start button, and changing the defaults for things like the photo viewer, media player, browser etc to the desktop versions.

i like a lot of the Metro apps and some are better than the desktop version. i guess it's just down to what the person prefers.

i understand and accept not everybody will like the idea of having Metro apps on a desktop pc but you can use win8/8.1 without even needing to use Metro apps, and just use the start screen has a launcher, so just pin all your favourite programs to the start screen.

Same old tripe being posted, I vote to ban OP.

Imagine a discussion with these people in a big hall. I think they'd be ripping other peoples throats out. I still can't get over a year later and they have these huge grudges thats eating them apart.

I mean you'd honestly swear Windows 8 was just launched yesterday reading some of the replies and it's exactly the same a year ago.

My hand was kind of forced with Win8 as my motherboard has specific features designed for Win8.

So I've upgraded but turned off off all the crap and installed Obit 8 start menu (Which is free and compatible with 8.1)

Now it looks and behaves like Win7 (Well, mostly!) :)

4xDVD Drives in Raid0.

You know what I mean though. I gave 8.1 four minutes before I turned the room blue with hatred. ;)
