It's all relative and personal choice,personally I would be using Linux only if I was not a gamer,OS X forget it I hate it,my point being we all like different things but change is always around the corner regardless of opinions.

It does appear to be metro inspired, but they've just used that look rather than going mad and changing the whole layout. IMO, that's all that was needed with Win 8.
I've gone from thinking "WTF?!" with iOS7 to finding that they've actually improved it. Maybe the new Windows layout will do that one day?

To be fair Windows was due a new UI sooner or later, Win95 to Win7 was more or less the samething UI wise almost 20 years(scary) ,I like the old Star Wars saying "you can only shave a wookie so many times" point being change was long overdue,it may not be to everybodys liking but what is?..Anyway change will come again sooner or later it always does and you'll get same debate on both sides of the fence.
It's not bad ,all about customisation,here is mine on Win8.1 Pro x64 RTM and yes all my games run fine even Steam/Origin ones.
Remember with Win8.1 you can boot straight to the old desktop UI,

I really don't understand why some people can't just say they don't like, or dislike it.
Not everyone will like it, but to call it a disaster just because you don't like it is bizarre.
Since when has it been okay to attribute unrelated negative things to something based solely on your dislike of it?
I'm not saying you should like it, but clearly it's not a disaster since countless people are using it on a daily basis with no issues. What's with the need to be so dramatic?

Been on 8.1 Pro now for a couple of weeks and tbh its definitely growing on me. Had Win 8 on my HTPC and Win 7 on my main rig but swapped them around. Takes a bit of getting used to but apart from the Start/Metro screen it's pretty similar to 7.

.Works fine for me,grows on you besides I remember thinking same sort of thing when I went from DOS to Windows(hated Windows back then).
Win8.1 is pretty good, I don't avoid Metro(why handicap yourself) and use it all ie old desktop and Metro very well with mouse and keyboard.
At the very least I give Microsoft credit for changing the very boring Win95 to Win7 UI,almost 20 years of samething,was like watching paint dry lol.

You're just saying that because I called yours bad. You haven't put any effort in with yours. You've used icons that were unsuitable for the start screen with them all having white spaces around them.
It makes it look cheap and says you've put no effort into setting it up properly.
With respect m8 I'm happy with mine,I'm not changing it(I did actually change my tiles to black/grey awhile back but its the same apart from that) and I don't like yours for a number of reasons which I could name but its pointless because its your Start screen and that's what you are happy with and I can respect that,at least try to do the same for others rather then telling them what they should or should not do .
Getting back on topic Win8/8.1 is a new modern direction I think Microsoft are going in to accomodate all hardware ,Win9 will probably go in the same direction probably with further changes and refinements.

I betya Microsoft have another op system waiting just around the corner, its a cert isn't it, either that or they will release a mega service pack that basically just turns windows 8 into something with the looks of windows 7 but with the tiny slight tweaks that make windows 8 run just a fraction faster, as I say, its pretty much a cert something will happen isn't it ?
