Windows 8 is....

Cheers, I've seen the '1' on the store logo for a while now, just not bothered to go into the store to find out what needed updating lol.

That's fair enough Spoffle, but none of those things really jump out and grab me and make me want to put Windows 8 on and bother to get used to it or bother installing third party software for a Start Menu that I already get after a Windows 7 installation.

I used to hate Windows 8, but upon reflection that's far too harsh as on a phone or tablet, it's great to use (but I feel the desktop is a bit crap on a tablet). I just... don't really love it either.

That's fair enough I think, and it goes to further cement my confusion as to why people have a meltdown over Windows 8 and how it's bad because it's not Windows 7.

I swear some people think 7 doesn't exist any more because 8 is out. If people want Windows 7, they install that, if they want 8, well they install that.

I admit, I really disliked the new UI of Windows 8 when I first started using the RC all that time ago, I really couldn't get on with it. It was because of the whole "change" thing. I then realised I was being stupid and decided to have a proper go of it, my conclusions were that MS messed up by not properly explaining how to use the new interface, and that was the main issue rather than the interface itself.

When I learnt how to use the interface, I got on with it fine and I prefer it over the classical interface, except one thing, I have never linked the solid colour window borders they introduced with Windows 8, I prefer the translucent ones from 7.

You can have w8 look and feel just like w7 and never touch the start screen.

How did you get the Aero Glass working on it?

tbh 98% of the time I don't even need to open metro UI, and I use my pc all day everyday....

you can easily use win8/8.1 without the need to open metro UI if you really don't like it.

I beam my PC to my main house TV downstairs.

The new UI is a massive improvement for these types of usage scenarios.

It's not bad ,all about customisation, here is mine on Win8.1 Pro x64 RTM and yes all my games run fine even Steam/Origin ones.

Remember with Win8.1 you can boot straight to the old desktop UI,

Hey mate, any chance you can point me in the direction to where you got these wallpapers from? Preferably in 1920*1200

All the cool kids hate 8 and thinks tiny little filetrees in a poxy small menu is the pinnacle of UI design.

So cool.

I did chuckle.

What I do find odd is how things have changed. The cool kids loved change no matter what it was. The cool kids now sound like what old farts used to be that hate everything and the older generation love to dabble and explore.

Sometimes I no longer see the OcUK forum of 2003 - 2007. Now it's hate and resist.

I resent being lumped in with the "change is bad" group. Microsoft can change Windows all they like as long as it's for the better.

Really don't like it, was trying to do some stuff in visual studio last night, and it was swapping between metro and desktop mode like a yo yo looking for my 'apps'. Might be alright if you just want one thing opened, but multiple windows it's pretty poor.

I ended up just doing run and typing the exe in and pin to desktop, hardly user friendly.

Install a Start menu (such as StartisBack, Start8 or Classic Shell) and Windows 8 is actually quite good. I do like the flat look and some of the other refinements. I'm really not sold on all these apps and the Start Screen. The Start Screen is better in 8.1, but still not as good as the old Start Menu.

Cool story bro.
