Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Been playing about this morning and getting the hang of it.

Installed Windows Live mail and all settings are still their and the same with Itunes.

Is it best to do an upgrade or go out and buy the software? bit of a diff in price. If I was to 'upgrade' could it be installed on another computer? or is it limited to just the one pc.

The only problem with the upgrade version i see is that it needs a copy of windows on the drive before it will install, even doing a fresh install from disc. That's if i'm reading the articles correctly anyway.

If that's right then it means you'd need to buy another proper copy if you were trying to put it on a new SSD/HDD.

Im trying to remove my windows.old folder , I'm using cleanmgr.exe , I can see the box to tick (remove previous windows installations) but I also have another option I can select called Temporary windows installation files?

Do I select both?

thanks

once you've ran the upgrade assistant from previous OS once and made a dvd or usb it saves some files from the previous OS then from that dvd or usb and u can boot from it u can install win8 on a empty hdd/ssd

some people here have already installed win8 upgrade on a empty hdd/ssd and activated

I really like the look and feel of the Metro Mail app, but it has zero functionality for a mail client! Why? Can't they make it so you can do all you normally can in say Live Mail? (which I've installed)

Luckily, I did not :)

I just re-installed Windows Live Mail and opened the program and my emails and folders where all there :)

Great.
I have download W8 to a DVD and was holding back for confirmation of this. It would not be the end of the world to re-import the emails, but it is one less thing to do.

I agree, I've upgraded and while I find I don't yet know fully the best way to do things I just keep an open mind and try different stuff, at some point it will become second nature. Learning the short-cut keys is a good idea too. Plus little things like right clicking at the bottom left brings up a cool handy menu, it's just going to take a little time to transition.

I'm enjoying all the benefits of 8 though, the speed of the OS is ace. Everything feels slicker and more polished to me.

When you click on the network systray icon it opens this massive network panel that is actually an app down the whole side of the screen. The entire panel is empty apart from the name of your interface at the top and then you can't do anything with it but right click and then turn on and off sharing. Wow talk about bad design. Small things like this just make me want to hit my head on the keyboard.

I also installed firefox and this metro notification pops up telling me that i just installed an app that can browse websites. oh great thanks for letting me know. Also i find the metro interface, although as i have already said, lame and useless. Very poorly designed overall, not very well done even for a touch device. It does not look finished imo.

Of course there is always going to be apologists that even if MS went with aero they would be on the forum defending going with aero.

This is a screenshot of the vista switcher is just alt+tab. I clicked the network icon in the systray and it opened that pointless panel over half the screen and now as it is an app it remains in my alt+tab forever until i restart the computer. Even trying to end task it does not work.

I should add that thank god for vista switcher which allows me to add an exclusion for the network "app" and remove it from my alt+tab. I think i might make a thread called "windows 8 gripes and fixes".

You are thinking about stuff too much the network bar is full of wireless networks on mine..... No need to be so OCD about making sure stuff is closed either, apps just get suspended when not used.

did u try win8 preview? if yes, u can't really moan about win8/metro because if u didn't like win8 preview u shouldn't of bought win8

This. My whole page is full of wireless networks, and there is loads of options when you right click them.

It's got nothing to do with "Microsoft apologists" and there's no need to be rude. You don't like W8 so instead of trying to slate it and anyone who is using it, how about stepping away from the keyboard, go do something productive with your time and stick with Windows 7 (or Unbuntu, OSX or any of a bunch of other fine OS's) which may allow you to work they way you want to.

Not agreeing with your view of something does not make someone a Microsoft apologist even if you'd like to paint it that way.

Jeeze...

Just upgraded my second PC to Win8 Pro,in this case my 15.6" Samsung NP550P5C laptop,it went smooth, had to uninstall a few things like Samsung software and Intel bluetooth,USB 3.0,MSE,however Samsung had some new software out and also new BIOS and sound drivers which I installed before the upgrade(Samsung software I did after the upgrade).

My Samsung boots quicker now then it did with Win7 and battery life has definitely improved, well worth the £14.99 upgrade.

This time I made an ISO Win8 Pro DVD (via the Microsoft upgrade assistant program)and then went back to Microsoft upgrade program and carried on with the upgrade via digital download.

I also installed WMC as well,no issues.

Two computers with Win8 Pro and WMC installed for 40 quid ,not bad at all :) .
