I wounder who will be the first to buy and install this product. I hope they do some reviews.

Is there specific hardware needed or is it just a case of adding drivers like in normal windows. For example could I use the x2 I have on an nvidia board :D

Hmm 32-bit, I take it it only supports 4GB of ram then? Not great for a server.

why does a server like this need shed loads of ram? it's for sharing files, and system backup/restore. that's pretty much it. i imagine most people will be installing this on crappy old 1ghz boxes with a 512mb-1gb of ram.

"Lack of support for device drivers (specifically for network and disk
subsystems).
Windows Home Server uses technologies from the Microsoft Windows
Server® 2003 operating system, and therefore it works only with drivers
that are designed for Windows Server 2003. Many components for older
consumer desktop computers do not work with Windows Home Server.

Minimum Requirement
1 GHz Pentium 3 CPU
RAM 512 MB
70 GB internal HDD
100 Mbps Ethernet
network interface card

Future versions
of Windows Home Server may
support 64-bit processors only.

An external Internet broadband router/firewall
device with 100 Mbps wired Ethernet connection.
Additionally, Windows Home Server assumes that
your home computers get their IP address from
the router/firewall device on your home network.

Note
Setup is not supported on laptops. Install Windows Home Server only on
desktop or server hardware."

Well I assumed a product called "home server" would be doing more than sharing files, which even windows xp home can do.

xp drivers work perfectly in windows 2003 so hardware won't be a problem. if it runs xp, it will run this.

you're right, file sharing is nothing special. it's main feature is the simple backup/restore. and if you're a ghost/acronis user you won't be amazed by it. it does simple disk image backup/restore over the network with a very noob friendly user interface.

They should have made a home server os that has easy to use ftp, web server, mail server, image hosting etc.

That would have been worth £90.

The clue is in the name... HOME server ;)

For those wanting to dump it on old boxes bear in mind that it wont install on anythinh less than a 36gb(ish) drive.. cant remember the exact figure but yeah. although im sure you can hack that

It's acctually 70GB now. I installed the RC version and had to buy a bigger drive because on a fresh install it said It could not find a drive with sufficiant space. Even though it was a new 60gb drive.

Really, my bad. Maybe it was just the beta. or maybe im just remembering wrong. either way thats a bit of a shame - be nice to be able to throw it on an old box with a wee hard drive

I've got (or rather will end up with) 3 machines in my house.

32bit Vista Premium Media Centre

32bit Vista Home Machine (my other halfs)

64bit Vista Premium Machine (my gaming machine)

If I build an old machine based around Windows Home Server, will my 64bit machine be able to work with this 32bit Build of WHS?

Or do I wait for the 64bit version of WHS?

Even then will the 64bit work with my 32bit machines?

Cheers :)
