Windows Home Server @ OcUK

quick question guys
am building up a file server for my video and mp3 files.will have 4-6 sata hdd. About 512 -1gb of ram.onboard gfx, audio etc
Would it be worth my while getting windows server or will xp or even vista perform better for me
only the pc`s on my lan will want to access it (and probably only 1,my main pc,at a time)

I have been a beta tester of WHS and found it to be very good, they are going to allow you to connect to your WHS from outside on another machine, and view your shared folders an photos etc

Also the "RAID like" storage is good to, put as many disks as you want in a box, and its stilll under one drive letter

very handy if you ask me

Server won't offer you anything more for this task, just map a network drive.

none of the data is critical as i already have it all backed up to dvd.
i already have a cobble job in place(3 500 gb hdd in an old AT case with long sata leads to main pc/mobo)
just want to use to make it easier to find my fave film or song rather than search through countless dvd carry cases for the one i am after

Lol... such an unnecessary piece of software.

Tried the beta version on my home server, doesn't appear to have many more features than XP, just an easier GUI for file permissions etc...

Hey up,

Have to say i love it, have it installed on my server and its a god send :D

The backup software built in is excellent, backed up 20gb vista install with wow and a couple of other games in 10mins, restores just as quick, you can also restore individual files or folders.

The web server side of it is excellent as well you register your server name at homeserver.com so http;://barney.homserver.com

and aslong as you have setup the accounts and have a decent password on it you can upload download and take remote control of the machines on your home network.

very handy for me :D excellent bit of kit and at £90 i think its well worth it.

Would suggest in purchasing a decent defrag app as well which must be home server compatible, perfectdisk 8 home server for example. As the dfs system can get quite fragmented.

Edit, only compatible with 32bit os's at the moment on the backup front. so have dropped down to vista 32bit ultimate on my main rig when i was using 64bit on it previously. But the 64bit extender is in the pipeline.

Sounds good, thanks Datamonkey.

Think I'll hold up until the 64bit version is out.

BTW are you saying that the restores are very fragmented once they've been put back on?

nobody got this installed yet? No1 interested in reviewing the operating system for fellow OcUK users?

Its really good,

what im saying is that if you want a defragger for the whs you need a specific version, same with the virus killers.

I had been using symantec corp edition on a trial box at work and it was causing no end of grief.

Haven't read all of thread.

so whats the diffrence between these and the other versions? what's missing and what's included. !0 clients as well for £90 .

Seems like a good deal. Is there plans for a 64bit version?

I have 3 pcs at home and installed the trial version on an old PIII/450MHz / 512MB PC and 2x 80GB - works a treat - backs up all docs / files etc every evening - no hassle. I keep photos / videos separately on a 1TB mirrored NAS - but this backs up windows and all other software on all 3 PCs in about an hour or so. Tempted to buy for ease of use - install and forget!
