Windows Home Server @ OcUK

...
The backup software built in is excellent, backed up 20gb vista install with wow and a couple of other games in 10mins, restores just as quick, you can also restore individual files or folders.

Is this a ghost/image type backup or just files?

Its an odd one to be honest, its done on clusters so im led to believe.

Backup can be set to run on all drives locally on the pc or selected folders files or anything.

Only things that done get backed up are pagefile and hiber files.

It is quite powerful, you can go back and select individual files to be restored or just blat the lot and re-install. Also when you boot from the recovery cd you can run a disk manager and perform the normal task such as partition re-sizing formatting and so on.

Also the web server side of things is excellent. connect to the home server. you can rdp onto any machine thats on the network and running wol or is already on.

nice one,

It really is excellent value for £90 just remeber when working on the server locally always use the shared folders. dont try and move things around on the hdds from explorer lol, DFS seems to have a weird and wonderful way of working with files and such

I learnt that one the hard way.

Also may interest some of you,

been reading up how to setup home server for utorrent use through the webui,

may try that out tonite as long as i get the problems with my main pc sorted out.

Another quick note.

If your torrenting on the WHS fit a smaller hdd and dont add it to the drive pool. For some reason torrent corroupt on the whs while downloading due to the way DFS works with files. I believe it starts downloading then tries to balance it onto the other disks while its being downloaded.

So fit a smaller drive say 40gb and assign it a drive letter, you can use this as a normal hdd and download to it. when downloads are complete then have utorrent to move them.
