Windows Home Server

I need DE

But we must remember that this is a “home” server. To me, RAID will most definitely require more maintenance and greater expense to the end user when compared to a Drive Extender-based storage pool. RAID is simply not the solution for a ‘home’ server. DE is. Or was… Is the Microsoft alternative to RAID or DE really no data redundancy at all? And please, don’t tell me that MS now has a great external backup feature. While that is nice, we all know that any IT department in a business uses both drive redundancy (RAID) and external backups. Key phrase = “in a business”. Let me repeat, RAID is simply not the solution for a ‘home’ server.
Going back to the questions above, my final answer to those questions are thus: while some consider Drive Extender to be just a feature of Windows Home Server, I consider Drive Extender to be Windows Home Server. Removing DE from Vail quite simply means that the new platform is no longer as viable for the average home user as its predecessor.

It makes sense to be honest, I don't think most of us are "home" users as such...

I'm right in thinking though each folder is limited in size to the hard drive its on?

Hmm.. no Drive Extender, no folder duplication
So it is either RAID 1 (if 2 drives is enough) or RAID 5. And the issue is you can't just add another drive to a RAID 5 array, you would have 2 arrays once you exhaust the initial one ?

Microsoft have really screwed this up IMO, Drive Extender and the folder duplication function were the 2 best things in WHS for me so I'll be sticking with my V1 box.

Thats what I was wondring, I doubt DE can be added as a user built plugin, there is simply too much going on, and too much tinkering as a deep level.

Does Vail V2 allow for software raids in the same was as windows 7 allows creation of software raids from the disk management section of control panel?

Drive Extender IS Home Server. Without it all you're getting is a slightly flashier GUI that you get with say Windows SBE.

RAID is not a solution for the home. Yes I'm techie enough to set it up, but the JBOD-ness of DE meant I could chuck in any old drive to extend the space. Now I'd have to buy drives of the same make and capacity.

To be fair, the only reason I wanted Vail in the first place was because it's based on Windows 2008 and would therefore natively support drives over 2TB, but I can live with the workarounds and will continue to use V1.

Have decided to sell up and get rid of my whs and move onto a ReadyNas. Fair enough it a more expnsive piece of kit, but it does everything I need in a small form factor and copes with Mac and Windows.

Was hoping that WhS 2 would be good enough reason to stay with whs, but no can see its not.

If you're happy with WHS 1 why not just stick with that? Or do you have a problem with WHS 1 and was hoping that WHS 2 would solve it ...?

Looks like I'll be sticking with as many 2TB drives as I can fit then.

For me: DE = WHS

Without DE, what's the point of a specific OS? Why not just run a cheaper version of Windows, such as XP or 7?

Yes, there's the computer backup bits, but with something like Acronis you can automate that bit anyway.
