Windows Home Server

Finally got all the components and build the server last night. Impressed with ease of use. I have tested most abilities, streaming and backups work well, however I am still having some difficulty in setting up the Remote Access. I still have some options to try out and then I'll probably come back for some advice if still not working.

The auto configure failed, so I forwarded the ports manually, but something is still not happy. I still think it is to do with the facts that the ports are still not accessible.

Just need some time without two children (both under 4) trying to help:)

It was working all the time. I was trying the domain name from my LAN and it failed due to loopback of the router. When I tried the IP address it worked. I am very pleased with WHS and my setup. It is just sitting quietly in the corner with only a power and network cable attached to it.

Made some progress again. My divx and mkv files were not piced up by my Phillips media streamer. Installing PS3 media server fixed that so all files are now streaming.

I had the automatic backup running fine Friday morning but last night (this morning) nothing ran. No errors or any indication, just nothing happened. Not really sure how to figure out why it did not run. Is there anything that would prevent the server from starting a backup if it was using a lot of resources on another task? I used the server to convert some videos to divx and left that running through the night.

i am having lots pf problems with trrying to make more sata ports on my WHS
i have installed a cheapo 4 port sata card (sil3114 chipset) that was recognised and drivers install ok but it isn't seeing all of my drives - not sure why.

anyone recomment a model of sata expansion card that works well with WHS?

Does the card BIOS see all of the drives?

Check the jumpers on the card to enable all ports.

I've had some hit and miss luck with pci sata cards too - it generally seems to be a hardware/bios compatibility with the motherboard thing rather than an OS/driver issue.

Currently running with a Sil3132 2-port PCIe card and a promise sata 300 TX4 4-port PCI card if that helps. The promise card is stable on my gigabyte mobo but hasn't been on others so wouldn't really recommend it.

next stupid question is about media serving

currently i have guest account enabled and am sharing my videos and tv folders
my popcorn hour sees the share and plays stuff fine
my sony s370 sees the folder but not any content

what is the media server of choice for WHS eg would the ps3 media server work for serving stuff even though i don't have a ps3 or am i just being daft?

Let me know how you get on, now its in RC, it'll soon be with us, and I for one would love to get the full version up and running, but without any form of drive extender, I am at a loss as to why i would bother.

Why use this over windows 7?

+1, can't see the point now, it was great I could use any drive i wanted and quicker extend the pool..

I'd try it out first but I can't see any use for this.

Well I'm not impressed so far.

1) No DE obviously.
2) Web access insists on using Silverlight for all media, which is no good if you want to use a mobile device. I had hoped with the growing popularity of HTML 5 they would use the <video> tag if Silverlight was unsupported, but evidently not. Huge oversight if you ask me.

At this rate I'll be restoring my 2008R2 backup and missing this WHS iteration.

EDIT: point 2 might just be because I'm accessing it from an iPad, which isn't presenting me with the mobile site. Quick check of Connect suggests they won't be adding support for the iPad for this release.

EDIT 2: Aha! Add a /m postfix to the remote site URL and you get the mobile site, which does provide some mobile streaming support. Bit of a hack though, and the mobile site looks naff on an iPad.

Here is my V1 install and under the "New Better" V2 I'd lose the folder duplication and I would have to copy these folders between the drivers I have. Not only that but I would also have

c:\
d:\
e:\
f:\
g:\
h:\
i:\

Yes V2 is a nice fresh install and looks good but to be honest I dont care. I switch it on to backup or upload some new videos, I dont care what it looks like!
