Windows Home Server

For those looking for a decent home server machine the HP MIcroserver has a £100 pound cashback offer which ends today. You can get it for £212 then with the £100 cashback it equals £112.

£112 for a server capable of running windows home server (remember you will need to add storage) is brilliant.

Be quick though as it ends today :D

I recently backed up my new rig which uses a SSD and AHCI, problem is when I use my recovery CD even though I've copied over the "drivers" from the bakcup to a USB drive it fails to see the SSD?

Chances are you have the wrong ones, I can't remember 100% but get XP and Win7 (x86 & x64) versions of the drivers and try both as there was an issue where recovery disk is one version and the drivers it's backed up are another.

I had the same problem a few years ago when I did a full restore.

So has anyone jumped on the WHS 2011 yet?

I've been thinking about getting a second server and rolling WHS 2011 but haven't done it yet. With all the initial issues with disk corruption on WHS v1 I thought I'd let some other people handle the live beta test!

It's also going to be a while until I'm confident in the third party drive extender offerings so again I'll let that settle down!

For now WHS v1 does everything I want so I'm happy to stay with it for now.

So has anyone jumped on the WHS 2011 yet?

If I get the Technet subscription I am after I shall have access to it and will install it virtualised alongside WHSv1 on the same box for testing.

I have no idea whether the 2 can co-exist or not to be fair but that's the plan until I know v2 can reliably take over the duties of v1

I know a few people here are using WHS with Mezzmo, can you list your hardware? My server won't stream full HD movies, and to be honest struggles with my large music collection. Storage wise its fine, but its a simple E2200/2GB Ram cheapo device, so have been considering upgrading.

Ah problem may be solved, it seems. Mezzmo are releasing a version that pre-transcodes files, so whilst it will take my server a bit longer than faster machines I won't need to stream full 1080p rips!

Well I upgraded to 2011. It is very good, despite the loss of DE.

Much better Remote Access. Much better backup (of server OS too), better networking (Homegroup integration) and better Streaming (over the web streaming too)

You just need to think about your disks carefully before deploying :)
