Windows Home Server

I did this a while ago when I swapped out my motherboard - just chuck in the DVD and select Repair (NO NOT select new install!!)

Only thing to be aware of is several of us have found that if your OS drive isn't the 1st drive the system finds, it may not offer you the option to repair. Make sure that your OS drive is the Master drive on the 1st SATA port. Also, you should have all of the drives attached when you repair or you may lose the data... can't confirm that but it's what I was warned about.

Once that's done it's just a matter of re-installing your Add-ons and you're away - was simple once the drive issue was solved!

I'm having issues with my whs. It will not see any USB devices.

It wont see the UPS or my external 2TB backup disk

Any ideas?

Just comes up with the message USB device not recognized everytime I unplug and replug in my extrenal HDD and UPS.

Its getting on my nerves and I have no way of backing up my shares

please help

I have tried this and it didn't work

i have found this useful to view/remove usb device entries that were causing problems

http://www.pendriveapps.com/usbdeview-usb-device-information-tool/

Thanks but how do I install if the drive is not being seen on the system..

Its just unkown device..My last back up was 2 weeks ago of the server and I'm panicking a bit

How to download, install and run USBDeview

Create a folder named USBDeview on your USB device
Download usbdeview.zip and extract the contents to your USBDeview folder
Click USBDeview.exe from your USBDeview folder to launch the program

System that's running my WHSv1 box has gone kaput somehow, so I've just ordered new MB/CPU/mem combo.

Hopefully I can just swap the hardware over and boot up and either just run, or do a repair of the WHS OS and not lose any data, correct?

Has anyone done this before, and can they give any bits of advice :)
Shouldn't have any problems as long as you make sure you select repair :p!

try the above but run it off a folder on your WHS desktop rather than a usb stick. i think that is what i did, but it was a fair while ago

You'd plugged it into a spare ethernet port :p?

Does anyone know..If I replace my CPU (I've purchased an upgrade), will I have to reinstall? Or should it work fine (not replaced the motherboard).

Oops! In my headmash I forgot to post the solution.

In my last ditch attempt to fix it

I shut down the server. Unplugged the power from the PSU and left the server off for 30 mins.

Rebooted and connected the drive and UPS

All working again, After 2 days of messing about I can't believe this was the solution.:p

I swapped my motherboard over (from an old DFI LanParty/XP 4200+ to a Gigabyte P41/Core2Duo) and it just fired straight into Windows - no blue screens, and once I'd installed the LAN drivers, is working fine!

I was very surprised at that, especially changing the motherboard chipset so much!!

I've just got around to setting up my WHS using WHS 2011. I’ve got Squeezebox server running perfectly fine which I was surprised at as I had expected it would be a bit of a pain for some reason.

I’ve got a couple questions however.

I’ve got 2 x 2tb HD’s in there at the moment. As such I’ve got 3 partitions. C Drive is 60gb, D drive is around 1.8tb and then G drive is about 1.8tb as well. WHS auto created a folder on my D Drive called “Server Folders” and inserted a pile of shared folders within that. It left my G drive empty and I’ve happily created two folders on that called “FLAC” and “MP3”

1) However what I’d ideally like is to have my C Drive with the WHS installation on it. The D Drive to only contain 3 folders “TV Series”, “Movies” and “Pictures” and then various folders within that. However when I try to delete any folders from the D Drive I then start getting errors in my Dashboard that “Server Folders” are missing and need to be recreated. Is there a proper way to go about this?

2) Secondly I used to have a Vortexbox setup which had an Autorip function which was fantastic for the amount of CD’s that I buy! I’ve tried to look to see what I can use to replicate this on my WHS however the options seem limited. There is a program called My Movies, however that wants to charge me about £50 for the priviledge of using their CD ripper. I have DB Poweramp on my laptop which I was hoping to use but this isn’t supported on WHS 2011 yet. Would I be able to install the Windows 7 version of DB Poweramp onto WHS 2011 (as I have done with Squeezebox Server)? Otherwise I’ll have to just use my laptop still and have it rip to a folder on the server.

3) Lastly, how do I do manual backups? I’ve set up a backup schedule although I might not always have my USB HD connected. As such I’d rather just be able to connect the drive and then press a button and it backups up. Also does anyone know the process for backing up. Does it just backup any changes so it won’t be a process which takes ages?

I don't think you can delete Server Folders that it auto-creates. A pain but how it is built.

RE: 3, I presume you are talking about the Server Backup and not the client backup? If you are you can disable the server backup by right clicking on the server through the dashboard and selecting "customize backup for the server". Likewise you can manually backup through that right click menu by selecting "Start a backup for this server"

That will enable you to backup manually to your external USB drive when you want to.

Well I've just stuck in my upgrades. New Q8400 processor @2.66GhZ, and 4GB of decent spec ddr2, and its pretty damned quick. Chuffed I must say. It can do anything I need to do now, so won't need to build/buy a htpc!

I am however...having heat issues.

Can anyone suggest a good solution? I think the problem is I've got too many HDDs in a pretty crappy case now, and it doesn't like it!
