Windows Live Messenger shutting down :(

If you will never use Facebook, then how do you know that MSN/Steam is so much better? Your dislike for a product that you haven't used is bizarre.

I used it for over a year and closed my account.

It's sad. I remember the good ol' days of MSN, everyone was all over it. God damn facebook

Yeah I will miss having big crazy group chats and then adding new people to my contact list.

As I've said in there, microsoft have too many apps, devices and services relying on the WLM platform for the whole thing to go away.

This will simply be the death of the WLM client as we know it today, just like you had to stop using Windows Messenger 4.7 that shipped with XP and install the MSN Messenger 6 Client.

They need to fight for it like they did back in the days over AOL, most young people don't even know what MSN now.

We use it at work, guess that will be fun for IT!

Surely to god you should be using Lync with federation services?

This (afaik) isn't going anywhere, and will still communicate over the WLM protocol to reach other clients like skype, and Windows 8's "messaging" app.

Lync 2013 has only just come out in the last week or two (to RTM), so the backbone of the federated services is going nowhere.

This whole "news" story is just the media blowing it all out of proportion.

Annoying as neither Steam chat or FB chat seem to do everything MSN does. Though there is surely an alternative out there that does the same as MSN. Annoying but not the end of the world.

Already knew this was going to happen.

Figure most people will just move to Skype.

But as I said on Facebook, an entire generation is losing our main socialising tool from our teenage years.

Stopped using MSN when I left secondary school. Didn't even realise it was still going.

Things like smartphones and Facebook soon gave us access to many more ways of communication.

I stopped using it the day the updated MSN to WLM and then decided you had to install "Live Essentials" just to use it....

Considering everyone and everything has a FB account, that's the go to online messaging thing now anyway.

Looks like Facebook finally killed off MSN, none of my friends use it anymore but I will never use Facebook. :(

It's not our fault your friends are inane idiots.

To be fair even if his Facebook account was full of his friends explaining what works of Shakespeare they'd read today it's still not a credible MSN alternative - its web based for a start, MSN is a standalone application.

MSN is the best and will always be the best. Inviting all my contacts into the same chat window and watching them all log out from the lag out. Also the A/ S/ L as somebody else already pointed out.
