Windows XP SP3

you might as well do it, didn't do anything to my laptop except make it network with my vista machines better. No speed increase or anything in my opinion

I think the best way to revert back to SP2 would be to repair the installation using a Windows XP disk with SP2 built in if you have one.

If you don't have one then just repair from your normal/SP1 disk & reinstall SP2

That's the way I know, I haven't heard of any easier way.

[Edit]
Just thought you could probably use the XP restore point tool, just make a restore point before you install, then if it doesn't work properly you can roll back :)

I have XP media centre 2005 service pack 2 installed.
The XP service pack 3 failed.
any ideas ?

ps-mind you i have a Dell laptop, i'll go and look on their website they
may have a custom install......

Edit: nope nothing on the Dell site. I'll leave it to sort itself out and try next week. :)

Windows is offering this to me this morning as well but I'm not sure whether to get it. I did try the final RC and it seemed to cause some issues, so I reverted to SP2. Are there any compelling reasons why I should get it? Presumably all essential security patches will still be given to SP2 users?

Same, but I didn't try an Beta versions. Are we in agreement that we should get this? :)

Edit: Also just been reading that SP3 doesn't agree with modified Shell32.dll and UXTheme.dll files, so people are suggesting to revert back to the original ones if possible before install. Just thought I'd let you know my findings

I am using SP3 and I've had no problems what soever, though I haven't noticed any particular benefits either, other than it seems to find the shared folders on my vista pc in network places when it didn't before without browsing to it.

I asked it to download and then it just disappeared lol. The automatic download icon just went from the system tray and the process was no longer in task manager. Suppose I'll try again next time I start my pc up

That happened to me too, went back onto the update site and am doing it manually from there now.

After a few false starts XP users get the much-anticipated SP3 update, which promises speed boosts and some of the fancy security features found in Vista.

Can anyone comment on the 'speed boosts'? Microsoft's SP3 white paper itself doesn't mention them. As for the new features, they don't mean a whole lot to me - should I be excited about them? :p Are they of any benefit to the average user?
