Winter 2012/13

Damn just checked the snow reoprt (ok its a little early) for my Jan destination and its saying this :

"Powder Possible :- 31cm of Fresh Snow is forecast for La Plagne over the next 2 days. La Plagne is reporting "Wet"."

Just over 2 weeks before the season officially starts in Plagne. Been checking one of the higher web cams (2500m approx) and its had some snow up there for a couple of weeks now. Next 6 weeks will seem veeeeery long

If oyu only ski once a year then I would say buy a pair of boots (get them properly fitted and heat-moulded, or suffer the pain) and rent the skis as they are so much more hassle to carry around.

I live 1-3 hours train ride away from some of the best skiing in the world, can't wait for Winter. :D

I'll be in la Plagne mid Jan

Bought a Dakine Heli pack (11 litre) today. Seems like a good size for a day bag instead of the 20 litre one I had before. Buying a bladder next I think - insulated if possible

Lets hope for a 9ft snow dump before I arrive at Alp D'heux on 12th Jan, then clear skies for a week... one can dream

I'm off to La Plagne (2050) later this month, anyone know what weather and conditions are like there start of the season? Never been this early before and im ruddy excited! but also slightly apprehensive at the potentially bad weather?

Watching the forecast and webcams is making me want to pack it all in and go live in the mountains for the next 5 months.

I've only been skiing once before. Help :(

It only gets harder the more times you go.

I think an ocuk 2014 ski expedition is due! Get a proper big (25-30 people) catered chalet for a week with a £500 limit. Must be able to get some sweet deals & on lift passes if 30 people are booking!

I don't think the time of season makes any massive difference to risk of weather. Jan last year we had some serious weather and you just have to go above or below it. One of the beautys of plagne is the height range, with such a range hopefully you can be well below or above if bad weather kicks in.

You will probably have some runs unavailable if really early season, particularly the lower ones (ie below plagne 1800) unless massive snowfall happens. I bet the glacier is loading up and is quite skiiable already. They have quite a few snow cannons as well so as soon as they feel comfortable that the temps are low enough I bet they will be getting good base layers down with the cannons.

Just over 2 weeks before season start, you could easily get a massive dump before then and if the weather stays cold your sorted ;)

Last year by xmas they had virtually everything open.

Would totally be up for that. Hard to organise though.

Demoing bacons in a snow dome, can't imagine anything more pointless :p

QuickLink 184cm definitely, no question.

Well I know they are more than sufficient for me off piste, I want to see what they are like on piste, hence the demo. Similarly I would prefer to try to mantras off piste as I am confident they are excellent on piste.

I think if on piste performance is a genuine concern then they probably aren't the right ski for what you want. They ski brilliantly on piste for what they are but I wouldn't take them out unless there's been a fresh dump and on those days you only use the piste as transport between the deep bits so it doesn't really matter how they ski.
