Winter 2012/13

Whats the difference in Boots between a £200 pair and a £300+ paid?

My Saloman ones have been fantastic with the inner mould and cost about £250 I think but no idea how I picked them. Think I just tried a couple on...

So many, no idea what different ones offer (apart from nice colours!)

edit - see with these 'nice green ones' what the hell does this mean...

Extremely versatile boot thanks to Fischer hybrid technology. Optimum flex for great performance both on- and off-piste.

Sounds like a punter boot for people who want to wander around the village in their boots.

Difference between cheaper and more expensive boots will typically be stiffness, the top end boots tend to be race focused, lightness, materials used, quality of liner and materials overall.

Most top end boots will be unsuitable for all but the keenest of downhill race wannabes due to the massive change in ski design, you just don't need super stiff boots to get the most out of skis anymore.

Right the missus has said it's a new pair of boots for Christmas :). Any recommendations for fittings nearest Cambridge? Probably have to go to London ..

It's not really near Cambridge, but Solutions 4 Feet in Bicester comes very very highly recommended on snowheads.co.uk, but you'd probably struggle to get an appointment before Christmas on a weekend - might be OK during the week.

Salomon, I've found, seem to over egg their stiffness mind. My Ghosts are "rated" at 120 stiffness. They're damn stiff, but I wouldn't say 120 stiff.

What Salomon skis have you won? Tempting, always... :P

Haha I have the very same ones. Ah, 130! I was close... They are not 130 though, for sure!

To be fair, I have the STH14 bindings on my 2012s and I don't think that their DIN14 is as tough as, say a Marker 14. Might just be because I was carrying about 3st more last year mind. That would do it...

I can have anything they currently have in stock!

Also, to whoever said avoid Ellis Brigham and Snow and Rock: that's a bit harsh. I currently work for EB, and the guys at my store are excellent boot fitters with a lot of experience. I can't comment on other stores, although I do know some of the guys. I have seen a few bad footbeds from Snow and Rock, but I'm sure our company has produced some as well. On the whole though we are very good. We actually have a physiotherapist who recommends people to come to my store to get footbeds made.

Especially when you are mounted close to centre too, it's pretty much the norm, my JJs are 185.

5'8

Skis with tip and tail rocker ski much shorter than a 'traditional' carving ski

I had Salomon X Wing tornados before and they were 166 I think?

Didn't realize it made that much difference. Would never have thought someone 5'8 would ski on 186's. Just asking as I'm thinking of getting a pair when I leave school.

I am 5ft9 and ski a 186cm navis from Black Crows:

All depends on your ability, strength, terrain, conditions. In powder bigger skis can feel much smaller and ski easier than small skis. For reference I also have a 168cm Dynastar Legend with 95mm waist and some old dyanstar omneglass 64's in a 158cm length and I tour with a 164cm Trab Duo 86mm waist.

The powder boards when on piste are fun, you can lay out giant GS carving turns although they sometimes pop out since the tip and tail are soft (as expected for a powder board).

I've skied a pair of 210cm Salamon AK Rocket Lab special editions, tairign down some powder faces in verbier they were damn sweet but extremely heavy and tiring when not at high speed in the powder.
It is kind like being in a speed boat, at low speed you sit low in the water/snow, if you get fast enough you hydroplane and things get very light feeling.

With bindings or without?

I can get these: SALOMON ROCKER 2 122 2013 (184) MARKER SQUIRE SCHIZO 11 GREEN 2013 for 408.86GBP without postage.

Where is that from? To be honest with you I don't think I'd be able to match that. I'm not sure if they come with bindings or not, but if they do they will unfortunately not be markers.

Interesting. I normally get 160 or 165s but then I have never really skid powder.

I have a bit in Canada and some fresh stuff in France but and it was a whole new level of difficulty - though after a bit if was like gliding, very easy but also easy to bail :)

Think i'll stick to 165s for the general hire ski
