Winter 2020/2021

Despite the obvious impact of climate change, exceptional winters like 1946-47 or '62-63 are still possible. It's not even clear that they are less likely as they are driven by exceptional synoptics.

The La Nina and the more likely dominance of westerly or north westerly winds means this winter might not be as warm as recent winters, wetter conditions are only slightly more likely than average. I think the outlook for snow is better this winter than last.

So far no hints of any drama over the arctic/polar region - looks boringly stable and normal :( though it is a bit early yet. Small out spill of cold near the end of the month but doesn't look it will have much impact aside from high ground over Scotland (lets hope I eat those words :s ).

I'm seriously thinking about retiring there though by the time that happens they'll probably be snow free too.

Last winter even Norway was scraping around - one of my YT subscriptions is a train driver there - usually have some ridiculous snow big houses half buried kind of thing - last year was a pale imitation.

I haven't seen snow for around 4 years now, wonder if we will have a proper winter this year into next? I'm looking for mild forecasts, because that usually means it will be cold :p

I'm desperate for a good snowy winter. My lad is now 8, and whilst he has seen and played in snow here in Cheshire...its only ever been a light covering at most. Enough to play and be excited...but I want to be able to sledge in it, build a snowman that lasts...

Basically be like a scene from the Snowman!

I was in Norway winter 2018 and 2019 and yes, you're right. 2018 was quite cold in Oslo, -8C to -10C, with six inches of snow or more in the mountains.

Last year when I was there there was nothing, not even a flake. it was very weird. The Norwegians were all going around scratching their heads about it because it was so rare.

Had apocalyptic levels of rain and hail on my way home from work earlier - gonna try and pull something from the dashcam later.

Sadly very little doing on the weather models at the moment - some hints of a few colder days around the 20th but barely a sign of snow.

My desire for a cold winter has been sustantially dampened due to likely lack of any skiing this year :( First year in 12 I'll not managed a week or more in Europe because of covid. However if we do have a decent winter and we're not locked in, there's always the lake district, if they run.

Very heavy frost here this morning - wasn't expecting it - got crazy frost patterns all over the conservatory glass and the vale looks picturesque.
