Winter 2020/2021

Conditions couldn't be more perfect for snow here :( temperature in the right range, ground dry and cold, snow type clouds overhead - I've seen a whole 3 flakes.
It's been -1C all day today and it's been snowing here pretty much constantly since yesterday morning, but just light most of the time so there is only a light dusting. Looks like some heavier stuff is picking up over the north sea now though and heading this way. Hopefully we get a decent dumping in the next few hours!

Same here. I don't really mind other than the weather forecast is just so rubbish. Yesterday afternoon the forecast was supposed to be "Snowmageddon" today with heavy snow for the largest part of the day. In reality it's been clear blue skies and a crisp wind.

I prefer the old style forecast. Red sky at night, shepheard's house is on fire... Non of this Thunder-snow nonsense.

what, you don't like a normal English winter being referred to as THE BEAST FROM THE EAST 2!! ?
Don't think we even have "proper" winters anymore. It's more like a cool autumn. 1981 sticks in my mind as my dad passed away that year. It was shocking, it was the only time we've ever had pipes inside the house freeze up. I thinks it's still the coldest December on record in the UK?? Eee, them were the days...;):)

At least where I was December 2010 was nothing on the notable 60-80s winters - a decent bit of snow and cold enough to produce some fair size icicles but it didn't have the weeks and weeks of cold.

On a related note - been a long time since I remember seeing 3 whole days of (mostly) -10 or below 850hPa level.

Shame it is mostly dry without much snow despite the snow row almost maxed on those days.

Met office say Dec 2010 was coldest Dec since their records began though.

I was out in that bitter weather for approx 5.25 hours today between cycle commuting and work, coldest day since at least Beast Of The East, absolutely evil! :(

It was horrid. The dog got 40 mins walk and I had to tap out, just couldn't stand it.

1963 was the coldest for over 200 years, it was nigh on another ice-age. Not 100% but think it was the last time the Thames froze over.

There's an old BBC documentary on iPlayer about the winter of 63.

It started snowing on boxing day and the snow lasted until march. I'm sure 1000s of sheep, birds etc died. Steam trains had to be dug out and waterfalls froze.

It's a great watch. Not sure if it's still on iPlayer.

Edit: it's here on youtube. https://youtu.be/qkZz-0LukYM

+1 for watching this, very interesting and it makes the odd bits of snow we occasionally get nowadays look like nothing!

Had a bit lay in Southampton through the night it looks like.

Yep, someone has been painting everything outdoors white overnight, feeling very fortunate that today is a rota day off... But it could all get compacted and icy in the next ~24 hours.

Still nothing but the odd few flakes in the air here :(

EDIT: Getting very fine powdery snow drifting through now but not in any volume or accumulating aside from where it gets stuck in corners, etc.

Got some really dense powdery stuff coming down now but looks like we are right on the edge of it and will be short lived.
