Winter 2023/24 - It's FREEZING!

I notice on a couple of weather forums they are noting the setup going into winter this year is most closely matching 1978 out of any historic record - 77/78 winter around where I live was the last proper snow event, but I assume they are referring to 78/79 which had late heat into October turning to wet and windy before abruptly changing to very cold into the new year with several brief but intense snow storms.

5oC this morning outside... Thermostat showing 17oC for house (16oC in bedroom).

Heating is set at 18oC but not on at the moment .. looks like I won't make it until Nov to turn heating on after all

Lots of condensation on the windows this morning which I haven't seen in ages. Don't think it quite got down to 5C but close. I've still got the window open a crack though.

16c in some rooms this morning. Still got the windows open on the vent setting though, no condensation this morning though we had it a couple of days ago when it was a bit colder than today. Heating will be going on soon I think.

Yep, lots of condensation on the windows this morning. No idea how cold it was overnight outside but the house hasn't dropped below 20.2C (it seems to be getting just that bit colder every night)
Think I'll have to crack the CH on soon just to make sure it all works if temps do plummet.

I found the humidity in our house was still quite high despite the dew point outside being as low as 5ºC. Opened the windows for a bit this morning and it's dropping the humidity right down :)

Your house must be so damp to have condensation at 20c.
Either that or your windows are terrible.
None here and its 16c indoors.

Windows are terrible, 24 year old double glazing, and we had a major leak in the kitchen a few months ago. It's only when the temp drops to low single digits outside that we see condensation though.
If it was 16C in here the wife would be demanding the CH go on!

I have a dehumidifier since last winter and still get condensation on the windows when it goes cold outside. Don't get where it's coming from.

My old (rental) house, 90s build, never any condensation or damp at all and never needed dehumidifier.

Newer houses are worse for it because they have less air flow.
Catch 22, seal it up great for getting bit worse for moisture. Or open your windows a fraction and its more costly to heat.

I used to have a dehumidifier but after experimenting last year cost is about the same as more heating with windows open Vs dehumidifier and windows closed.
With the benefit of fresh air.

Yeah houses these days are too 'efficient'
Never had condensation in the house I grew up in, with draughts and single pane windows, just frostbite.

No my house now is far older, a 30s build.
Possibly a damp issue somewhere? Our kitchen leak went unnoticed for quite a while I think, and we had mould where we'd never seen any before in 20 years living here. I'm still not convinced the house has recovered.

Only here a year so still things to discover I'm sure. But even in the summer the humidity never got lower than 60-70% even when not raining, so really not sure where so much moisture could be coming from.

10 degrees cooler than last week, still plenty of bare flesh though
