Winter car issues / moans

Thought I had some screen wash. Dad topped it up with his SW. The bottle I have which I thought it was screen wash was anti freeze! I remember putting that in my previous car’s screen wash bottle!

From googling it makes the windscreen smeary and could damage the jets and pipes! Whoops!

Alcantara (man made suede) if you can, its by far IMO the best car seat material. (Half leather so sides being leather for sliding in and out wear if you can)
Its pretty tough, its warmer in winter and cooler in summer (unless you have funky cooled seats). As its man made its pretty easy to clean.

Sure in 20 years leather would look better. But realistically how many cars at that sort of age do you really worry about the seats condition.
Ironically as you said this I was thinking of the MGF/TF which are all 20 years old or so. I've been scouting for used seats and the alcantara are all a bit fuzzy and tired!

My car has optional 'winter pack' which includes heated steering wheel and heated seats.
But does not have a heated windscreen...

First world problems I know!
Have resorted to chucking windscreen cover over when temperatures are sub-zero. Does the job!

My 996 was a nightmare last year in winter. Coming to it in sub zero with the screen frozen solid and it taking 10-15 minutes to clear the windscreen.

I've got a Mk5 Golf GTI for winter duties this year and it's significantly better at defrosting. The neighbours are probably grateful on days I'm getting the train to London as its a dam sight quieter on cold start too.

I've got an E46 330d (aka Shed Mk2) which currently has zero functioning glow plugs thanks to a failed module, a membrane in the passenger door that lets water in and an asthmatic blower motor. I'm not driving it too much at the moment because of the salty roads, but I wanted to take it on a run to work on Friday to keep the battery going. Plus I get hankering to drive a manual after marvelling at the odd choices the auto-tragic box in the 335d makes.

I got in the 330d on Friday morning and it was -5c. It started first turn of the key despite being sat out in the cold unsused for a week and having no glow plugs, but was a bit lumpy for a few seconds before smoothing out. However, thanks to the membrane in the passenger door, some of the inside of the windscreen had frozen. So, although I had removed the ice from the outside of the windows I had to let the car sit and idle with the blowers weezing their best at the windscreen for 15 minutes before I could drive off. The brake lights stick on first thing in the morning if its freezing, but the work around is to tap the brake pedal a few times before turning the key (I guess this wakes the switch up in cold temperatures), so its not much of an issue.

The 335d (aka Shed Mk3) is the better car to take at this time of year because it has none of the above problems, plus heated seats, although I don't tend to use them.
