Wisdom tooth removal

Pain/recovery depend on how much of a battle the doc has in getting them out.

I had all 4 out at once in the dentists under sedation. Bottom 2 had grown backwards and impacted into my jaw, top 2 had grown sideways, None of them had erupted... that meant lots of digging....

I was in a fair bit of pain for about 4 weeks afterwards as the swelling went down and all my teeth decieded to move around to get comfy again with the newly improved living conditions.

Still one of the best decisions I ever made though :)

Mate had all 4 out in the detists chair under standard anesthetic and he was back at work the following morning without any problems.

My only recommendation is to stock up on ibuprofen and drink loads of water :)

I've had 2 out from the bottom jaw (they came out 3 years apart), was eating withing hours the whole thing was relatively painless (after 4 injections :).

Ive been told countless times I have to have mine out - Its been 12 years since being first told and they are still in!

The teeth are fine, not come thru properly so gum gets infected a lot... I think I should have them out now - as gum infections are getting more frequrent :(

Still have mine, dentist said as long as they arent causing problems dont bother :p
I hope I will never have to have them removed, have bad memories with one tooth that had to be removed :(

I had all 4 out under general. The op went ok, but my mouth was kinda swollen and numb for a day and I couldn't eat for 24hrs at least. On day 2 I could manage soup and some mash, but that was it. for the following 3-4 days I could eat 'easy' stuff, like more mash and maybe a sausage. After about 5 days I was pretty much ok.

Hope it goes ok!

Thanks for all the replies guys :)

I expect I'll be too out of it tomorrow to post on here but will hopefully let you know how it went on Friday!

I've had the bottom left one removed because it was growing in the wrong direction (straight forward towards the tooth next to it). Had it done in hospital under local ... wasn't to bad apart from the grating noises (there was nothing wrong with it other than the direction hence a lot of force was needed) ...

Hurts a bit even with pain killers for about a week afterwards but by the end of the week most of the swelling should have gone down and people stop referring to you as a chipmunk :)

Not painful at the time, (dentist had a heck of a job removing mine, I felt a bit like someone had been at me with a crowbar by the end of it, horrible cracking sound when he did finally get them out). Ached like mad for days afterwards. Once the injections had worn off though it ached like mad and did so for days, healed up ok.

If I was about to go in for anything like this, the last thing I'd want to do is post on the forums and hear everyones horror stories heh.

Yeah me too that’s why when I was given the choice to remove it or have the root canal done I picked the latter. Now I know it’s going to hurt but didn’t want to lose the tooth really!

what is a root canal???

Why should they be removed anyway?

I have all 4 of mine and no problems at all.

I've often wondered that. Our old next door neighbour went to the dentist once. There was a minor bit or decay on one of her wisdom teeth. The dentist wanted to remove it because "you don't need it". I can't help thinking that it's just an excuse for dentists to make a bit of money.

I had one out under local anaesthetic, and am due to get another one out soon too.

One word of advice - don't yawn, after you wake up. I thought I was going to pass out, the pain was that bad.:o

The first few days after having the tooth out wasn't too bad, and I thought I was getting it easy. But I was soon eating painkillers. :(:p

Some people's wisdom teeth cause no problem at all.

They can cause infections if they are growing incorrectly. I have three growing at 45 degrees and another at 90 degrees and I've been told twice I need to have them out. Only had 2 infections so far in about 7 years so going to see how it goes. I've been told I'll definitely need it done under a general because of the difficulty they will have in removing them.

I have had 2 out via general anaethetic, i guess i was lucky as it didn't even ache a little bit, i didn't even need to take the pain killers i was given by the hospital.

Already heard a couple of horror stories from people at work and also had a warning from the hospital themselves that it'll be painful for a while afterwards.

The way I figure it is to prepare for the worst rather than expecting an easy op and getting hit with the pain after!

I had all four taken out at a dental hospital, sure there was slight swelling (and i mean slight) but i dont recall it being really painfull. I recall my jaw being stiff for around a week. I think a lot depends on the person, some people might swell more than others and everyone has a differnet pain threshold................its probably not going to be as bad as you may think. Dont worry about it.
