Wolfdale e8200, e8400 and e8500 available for Pre-Order!

Mine arrived. But I refused delivery.

Crazy you might say.

I think yer right.

But truth is as follows:

I have an Asus P5B Deluxe (which will support the E8400) which is running my Q6600 happily at 400 x 8 = 3.2GHz.

In anticipation of this new CPU, I decided to drop the multi and up the FSB.

Im not able to get a stable P95 going at 416MHz :(

Now I am running 4 x 1GB Geil ULL stuff. And couldve taken one pair out to see if that couldve been the issue.

But to be honest, I was seeing it already, i.e. messing with my rig and before I know it I will be forking out for 2 x 2GB PC8000 sticks, new mobo, new Heatsink etc. I.e. upgrading big time.

My original idea was to get the E8400 in and sell the Q6600 for the same price (i.e. nothing lost or gained... well... some speed gained at least!)

So really, worst case scenario, running at 400Mhz x 9 = 3.6GHz which isnt anything to write home about is it.

So... common sense finally began to creep in and this is why I decided to reject the delivery and RMA it back.

eek! Its a known issue that the P5B doesn't support quads over 400FSB but with a dual core it can reach 500FSB + ...

Id love one of them e8500's but will they run on a reserator xt, esp if i OC it, or do they run too hot?
currently got an e6600 @3.2ghz on it and runs ok

I'd think so, saying that the e6600 will be running hotter. Should be able to push the e8xxx further thanks to the smaller die. :)

What I was wondering though.... as I'm looking to upgrade end of this month.

Would the e8xxx be better than the Phenom 9600+ Black Edition?

I think I know the answer, yes, but the Phenom is not multi-locked and has the benefit of being quad-core not dual. Or does the fact that the e8xxx can do 4Ghz+ mean it'll be better anyways?

Cheers!

EDIT: Oh, and the Phenom is like ~£30 cheaper as well. Saving me money. lol.

i really dont see the point in buying these cpus.
there way over priced

look at it this way a quadcore would be more future proof and cheaper than these 2core wannabees.

LOL, the Quads are more wannabees, they are 2 Dual Cores stuck on 1 wafer. ;) (not saying its all bad but kinda makes your statement funny.

To be honest, I am happy with my PC's performance and I can run everything at full detail settings..except Crysis (at a decent rate)... but then everyone has that same problem.

For most of us, its gaming, and from that perspective I dont think we can expect groundbreaking performances from by upgrading from our 3.2/3.6GHz machines up to 3.8/4GHz typical levels of the 84/8500.

Would've been nice to say that you have a 4GHz system though :D

You tit!! Just as Devious said, the Deluxe P5B is a completely different animal with dual cores!! with the later 0505 bios I’ve seen people push as high a 550MHz! it’s a very stable board, just doesn’t like overclocking power hungry quads, pretty much like any 965 board except even compared to current premium boards it still clocks dual cores just as well!

You were this >< close to running 4ghz+ dude, but you turned it away!!

Hopefully this will cause a price crash on second hand quads and 6750's 6850's think i'll pick up a cheapo 6850 can't be worth more than £100 now.

6850 G0's are great, we've seen them run 4Ghz with as little as 1.5v on air.

After all the hype these E8400 ES samples have caused, we're seeing joe public retail chips struggle to run prime/orthos stable at 4Ghz on realistic air cooled systems.

So from an overclocking point of view there pretty much bang on equal.

From a performance point of view it seems the additional 2MB of cache doesn’t significantly help the 8400, quite a few head on "6850 vs 8400" comparisons have established this. In favour of the 8400 we see a gain of 4% average with number crunching apps and an average 1.5% increase when gaming.

So again the performance of the two cpu’s is pretty much the same.

New the 6850’s are around 170-180 quid from a reputable retailer, which is about 30-40quid more than the 8400. So new for new the 8400 wins hand down.

Looking at the second hand market, right now a good clocking 6850 G0 sell for around 130-140, 120 if you’re lucky. It’s going to be a while until we see them selling for around or less than 100 pounds, heck I sold my old E6600 for just shy of £100 two weeks ago.

100 pounds is still a lot for a used dual core, no matter how well it performs. So I still think an E8400 is a better deal, even though initial reports are a little disappointing with the retail chips.

The magic numbers are definitely being churned out with the E8500s, maybe that’s why they costs 60 quid more!

Ohh god I just realised why he turned his penryn away because he thought 400 was max, damn so good opertunity he missed AND to tell us how good it overclocked :(:p

I'll say it again...the P5B Deluxe is plenty capable of clocking quads. Mine was running 460fsb stable (x8 multiplier) with a B3 quad

There must have been a few different revisions because results seem to be very variable with that board, even with the latest bios. I’ve seen many people really struggle to overclock their quad past 3.2ghz. MaX_PoWah and another chap from this forum are both having issues getting their Q6600 stable past 3ghz, but then if you look you find a few people managing a decent 3.6ghz oc.

Sorry this has totally gone off topic!
