Wolfdale e8200, e8400 and e8500 available for Pre-Order!

Well the cache must make some kind of difference, my e2140 seems to be killing my rig and the only major difference between it and the e6 range is the cache.

Help me out here guys. Relative newby, slightly off-topic question...

How come my E2160 on 3ghz (333*9) does 21 seconds on 1M SuperPi. When up against Weescott's E8500 at 2ghz (333*6) doing 14 odd seconds, it seems a massive difference. What drives it?

Thanks

ps apols if this is an "enthusiast" only thread ;)

Weescots pic shows the 8500 in CPU-Z just after it has speedstepped down to 2Ghz. The super-pi test was run at stock 8500 speed which is 3Ghz, 333 x 9.

Still a very impressive score though, and faster than my E2180 at 3.6Ghz! The cache certainly helps with super-pi.

Im 16.1 Secs currently at 3.9GHZ on a E6850 so will soon see what the E8500 drops that too :)

Hum, thats just a little slow buddy, my old E6600 at 3.8GHz managed to get into the 13 second range, randomly my Q6600 runs a faster pi at the same speed. 4ghz see's it into the 12s.

My old E6600 was a dual core buddy.

Anyway super pi is a single threaded app so how many cores you have "shouldn’t" really be relevant.

Indeed. To give you an idea how much, my E6850 @ 3.6Ghz (400x9) scored 14.2, so pretty much the same as the E8400 at stock. In other words, the 6MB over 4MB cache makes up for the 600Mhz speed difference!

Helmut: he's right - 16s is far too slow for a 3.9Ghz E6850, see my figures above.

Dont know why I always read as Q6600.

I also dont know if 16 is slow or not, but dont care as wont be on this Mobo or CPU much longer (Mobo Sucks).

Gimmie the SuperPI link incase mines is wrong, its SuperPI Mod 1.4.

Well sort of, Weescots has an E8500 not a 3Ghz E8400, so it’s really 3.16ghz 6mb 14.88s pi vs your slightly faster 3.6ghz 4mb 14.2s pi.
So as far as 1mb pi is concerned the extra cache makes up for around 300-400mhz.
Still mighty impressive.

My E6750 @3.6Ghz also scored 14.2, but the E8400 also @3.6GHz does it in 12.9
