Women and makeup

Lol at the 'to attract mates' lot, so all women who are married or in relationships, who wear makeup, are looking for something else?

Hell, some women wear makeup so they look good in the eyes of their female friends.
arctane has explained it, what don't you understand.

If a woman plasters herself in makeup on a date then it's OK for the man to lie about his job and salary. Both will find out the truth in the morning :)

Most people style their hair, wear make up, wear aftershave, dress nicely, etc. because it makes them feel good. It's not just for attracting people.

If this were true, why do women in relationships bother still wear makeup?

Being attractive is one of the many ways to gain social advantage.

I don’t know why the phrase, ‘women wear makeup to attract potential mates’ suggests those women also want to have sex with said mates.

I certainly haven’t said that. In most cases, especially where the woman is married, that isn’t true.

They want to appear attractive to people for various reasons. That doesn’t necessarily mean they reciprocate that received attraction.

The bottom line, once again, is that the only purpose of makeup is to improve attractive appearance. That is axiomatic. The reasons to appear attractive are vast and examples have been mentioned in this thread several times.

This is probably a silly thing to talk about, but was just watching Nicola Sturgeon on the BBC news and she's wearing lipstick and eye makeup and whatever else women put on. Unless a woman is trying to attract a man or a woman, what is the point? i'm sure she'd look fine with no makeup.

it’s all part of getting dressed, like putting on a neat ironed shirt and clean clothes and shiny shoes.

If someone can provide another purpose for makeup other than to improve how attractive one appears I’ll be happy to discuss it.

To help mask scars, pockmarks, and downplay certain disfigurements.
To make actors/actress look a specific way on film (hint: it isn't always to be more attractive).
People cosplaying?

That would be to improve attraction. Why would they hide something with makeup if it was considered to be attractive?

That’s a good point but it’s not relevant to the context of what’s being discussed in this thread.

+1
Pretty much covered it all.

There are some very old fashioned views on this forum.

Wearing makeup is generally about trying to make the best of yourself. If you look good then you tend to feel good. Putting on makeup is just part of getting dressed and ready for the day ahead.

I can’t even get over that there’s a discussion on here about makeup. I know this is the new mumsnet but Jesus ******* Christ. Come on!

What’s worrying is some of you don’t even know the real reason why someone puts makeup on.

Okay thanks, I’ll check that.

I do however think it’s much more likely that you don’t understand the word ‘potential’.

I understand it just fine.

You said they wear make up to attract potential mates, not to potentially attract mates.

Perhaps some sentence composition training is in order for you?

I'll fight any English **** who wants te have a go at our Nicola :D
Cheeky *******, that ******* troll Teresa May wore make up too, explain THAT ****.
