Talking of black folks, its a very little known fact that in the original source material, the oompa loompas were actually black skinned, lived in trees and wore animal skins, though nobody seemed to mind them being orange instead :)

Money presumably, the big studios are risk averse when it comes to anything unproven or untested much safer to put it into something that people already know/are familiar with.

n.b. is it just me or does the trailler look very Harry Potter? Not surprising coming from WB I guess they're aiming for the same formula of fantasy brit-ness which seems to go down well with US audiences

Well it did say from the producer of Harry Potter.

Plus they know Harry Potter is still popular and Willy Wonka isn't.
 
The trailer looks great, and I see it's by the same director as Paddington.

I'm a fan of the 1971 and 2005 films, having bought both together in a single DVD case, so I'm looking forwards to this new instalment.
 
Chalamet doesn't look great as Wonka from trailers. I wonder if they reshot much after the first trailer.
 
Wow tbh that first trailer was an absolute turn off 100%

This second trailer has worked on me, it looks genuinely funny (hugh grant mostly) and different enough from the classic that i'm actually interested.

Willy Wonker was one of them films we had on VHS as a kid and we watched it until the tape physically snapped :P So i have fond memories lol
 
I've only seen the trailers, but as @Efour said, I'm getting better vibes from the 2nd one. It has a bit of an early 1900s / steampunk thing going on which I like. I also liked that the trailers still acknowledge WB's past work with the Harry Potter franchise, not too afraid to back down or be silenced by a certain group of boycotters. The Oompa Loompa looks great in the trailer and I'm not aware of any backlash unlike the hoo-har on Snow White 2024 with the dwarves.

I'm aiming to watch Wonka on the big screen on Tue 19th Dec if my pal has recovered from his cold by then.
 
Just returned from seeing it, definitely a family film but very enjoyable and happy. I’d be up for seeing it again tbh, and Hugh Grant was brilliant!
 
I've just been to see Wonka at the Stafford Odeon. It had a certain warmth to it like the original 1970s Charlie film (although I liked 2005 Charlie as well). I liked the vibrant colours, the 1900s early electrics and steampunk style. The 'innocent-evilness' of the evil characters gave a kinda Lazy Town feel to the film as well. Quite surreal and goofy at times, lots of magic. It is very much a musical and I enjoyed the soundtrack. The main plot (without spoiling it) is about a chocolate cartel, likening it to a drugs cartel with drug barons. A few innuendoes for the adults but mostly aimed at kids. I did enjoy it though.

7/10.
