Woo-hoo, the clocks go back to GMT this weekend!

Good for him. Hopefully this will spread to other countries. It's always been a case of politicians kicking the can down the road instead of doing the right thing and scrapping it.

I mean no one can even remember why we do it.
If we do scrap it does that mean we lose the extra hour of daylight in the summer evenings ?

I naturally assumed the Trump proposal was him just saying something to distract from some other negative Trump news, like some pick or other of his for office being found to be a closet Nazi or something.

It's exactly as I said, BST is the preferred of the two. When we switched from BST to GMT is when people complain.

eg -
No, a small vocal minority complain. Most people either enjoy the light mornings or only complain at the necessity to change rather than being on GMT

The problem if you moved to BST is then you would also have to reschedule things like school to start an hour later so it would be pretty pointless.

When the EU proposed a change to scrap DST it was exactly that, no DST and keep to the correct time zone

Trump made it very clear he wants to drop DST, not make it permanent.

It would be extremely baffling to completely ignore the meridian that runs through the country and permanently use BST/'+1'.
As others have said, the logical solution to dumping DST is to just stick with GMT and this is also backed up by a lot of the health and sleep research around DST and the solution that tends to get punted to (the UK) government - one reason (of GMT) is due to the increase is morning light to help with circadian rhythm and body sync.

I think there are a lot of non vocal that don't like it too... It would be an interesting poll if someone can set it up.

Personally I think it would be baffling to stay on that time simple because... I mean, hardly anyone else in the world does.

Basically there is no majority at all but it is very clear that people both want to end changing the clock changes and the reason is almost entirely pointing to the benefits of keeping to standard time, and dropping DST.

So really it is a bit of an education issue. If we can convince enough of the people that somehow mistakenly believe DST/BST is better, that standard time is what they actually want from dropping DST then we would probably end up with a majority vote fir sticking to GMT. This way we can preserve the benefits of more natural sleep patterns matching circadian rhythm and safer commutes for school children etc that people actually most want.

I've always been in the BST camp — I prefer longer evenings and dislike the faff of the clocks changing.

However, this year I've been particularly conscious of how dark it is when I walk my daughter to school at 08:15 and how dark it is at 07:15 (when we would be walking to school if the clocks hadn't gone back). Considering we're in Cornwall, so about as far south as you can get in the UK, it's going to be much darker for most of the rest of the country. I can now totally see the argument for GMT for winter mornings.

I always thought the health issues connected to putting the clocks forward (like increased heart attacks) were due to losing 1 hour of sleep the night before, rather than an ongoing issue of a changed circadian rhythm. So I assumed if you changed the clocks once and kept it at BST from there on, you wouldn't see the spikes in heart attacks etc. But maybe that's only half the story.

Can't we just meet in the middle and change the clocks by half an hour once and leave it at that?

I mean, hardly anyone else in the world does.
'Hardly' anyone else uses GMT/UTC?
You mean like -
  • UK
  • Ireland
  • Iceland
  • Senegal
  • Portugal
  • Madeira
  • Liberia
  • Ghana
  • Sierra Leone
  • Gambia
  • Mali

What's the reasoning to use 'UTC+1' (technically you would assume the UK time zone would become CET) other than ignoring the research and the issues around creating/moving time zones? You've yet to offer one...

I mean I could say there are a gazillion of non vocal supporters of GMT.

You're right though, hardly anyone else in the world uses the same time as us. Anybody would think we're living on a massive globe in space or something.

So, the point being 'we should stay on GMT because we're on the Meridian Line'. Of all those listed, according to Google, I think (aside from us) only two of those are. So yes, of 195 countries in the world, about 1% are on the meridian AND use GMT. Again, thanks to Google I see of the countries on the Meridian Line, many of them use GMT+1

A reason to keep BST over GMT? Have you read the thread?

Tbh, after reading 'we'll tell people what there opinion is' as an argument, I've kind of lost interest here, so I'll leave you guys to it.

FYI, GMT is a time zone, those countries (other than Greenland which was an error) use said time zone; UTC is specifically in reference to time.
Again, i've given you a few reasons (over a few replies) as to why it's preferable for the UK to stick with GMT; the meridian line running through the country isn't the sole reasoning behind it although the fact time is based off that does it give a lot of weighting.

Perhaps i should have made it clearer, my bad, but i was after your reasoning or reasons you know rather than other users to why it would be better to stick the UK to permanently CET/UTC+1, similarly to how i've mentioned a number of reasons to why GMT is the better option.

Usually helps to turn up to a discussion with an opinion other than deflecting with 'read the rest of the thread' but fair enough; have a good'en.
