Words that grind my gears!

"of which" and "actually"

Of course it's ******* actually. What are you, talking in metaphors all the time?

Of which is used so inappropriately by all sorts of people on the internet. I don't understand why they don't think before they speak.

Also, Americans saying "go ahead and *insert verb here*". Why are you announcing that you're going to do something that you're then going to say you're doing. Idiots.

Hack is fine as a word used in a context like "hack off that tree branch", or genuine computer hacking.
The problem is when it's used to mean any sort of nefarious computer behaviour (not too bad but a bit of a misnomer) or worse, in popular culture recently where any sort of tip for everyday life is labelled a "hack".

Quickly defrosting your car windscreen is not a "hack" (well, maybe if your method involves an ice pick...).
Using aggregators to find cheap flights and accommodation is not a holiday "hack".

I should probably just get over it though, because use of language evolves over time. Computer hacking wasn't a thing 100 years ago.

Adults pronouncing words like toddlers... samwiches, ickle.
I agree when used to other adults. But to children it's what you're supposed to do with sounds. Then you have the accidents where because you do it with your children you slip up and say it to another adult.

People over using the word "like" annoys me.

Just had a meeting with a guy who repeatedly said, obviously, informative information (duh), and the ones that most wound me up - yourself and myself. It's you and me!!! Saying big words does not make you sound smart.
I worked with a right grammar nazi and she kicked my ass on the "yourself" stuff about a decade ago. Even today I wrote yourself then went back and corrected it lol. She just mocked me for talking like it was ye olde English.

when someone is talking to you about something and goes off on a dozen unrelated unimportant to the subject matter tangents then comes back to the main point with 'so anyway' and they do that in the space of 5 minutes. i'm just in my mind thinking 'cut the waffle, get to the point'.
