Currently work 10-6 and suites me ok. I am definitely not a morning person so an extra hour or so is appreciated.
I have worked at sainsburys the last 2 summers to fuel my student drinking habits. First time I did a night shift. It was HORRIBLE. The pay was better but it was full of polish people/social rejects and it was so so depressing. Hated sleeping most the day too.
Second summer I worked in the bakery 6-4, which was OK but, hated getting up early, but day did tend to go fast.
We aimed to staff the office with each team having atleast one person covering between 08:00 - 18:00.
I generally come in at 08:00 and leave about 16:00 ish. Often stay on though where required, but due to the location of the office and parking issues getting in early and staying on beats sitting in traffic (would rather read / surf the net for 45mins at the end of the day than sit burning my clutch out).
I could do any 8 hour shift if I like - 08:00 is a nice starting time.
Flexi for me. I'm in a fortunate position in that while I do have to contact outside agencies occasionally it's as and when I choose (in a reasonable timescale). So I don't need to be available at any given time. I could if I chose work my hours in a 4 day week.
Of course given the realities of the situation I tend to let people contact me when I'm not in work if required and my flexi time tends to be me getting there at 6:30 and leaving at 6 but that's through my own choice.
If I needed to do a set pattern I'd probably shoot for getting in and out as early as possible, I prefer to have my evenings free.
