work sick...

Why does 3 sick absences in 1 year = disciplinary? Surely if you're sick then you're sick?

This is something Ive never understood either. A really stupid thing. Dis-action for falling sick! What happens when the punks further up the ladder fall sick 4 times..like the head honcho? Disciplinary for him/her too?

Nothing will happen to them of course. It's to keep the proles in line.

Soundood, what would the Bradford Factor Score generally have to be before it starts ringing alarm bells?

at my work once you get to 80 you get a letter of concern then anything above they look at on a individual basis, i've also heard after a set point i think its 800 its automatic dismissal (dunno if its true) but i also know a couple of people have scores of well over 1000 and even a dude who has one of 10k ( i started at the beginning of december and never seen him lol)

I guess it just depends on ya face and reason.

The whole bradford factor is designed to stop people taking single days off here and there as thats what really disrupts my work place, if they know your having a week they can arrange cover but one day really screws them !
 
Damn, I'm 3²x10 at the moment, which gives me B=90! A colleague in the same office as me though has had 40+ sick days in ~8 separate occurrences in the last year, which gives her at least 8²x40, which is 2560... at least!! She still has her job, so I think I should be ok lol.
 
Last sick i had was back in September (2011) for 4 weeks. Had an operation on my left ear, so that was legit.

Before the operation had a week off in February (2011)
 
Well my first day of work in my new job 10 years ago I went home at 2pm and never came back in for the rest of the week. lol Great start.

Since then, mainly cause my boss does not pay sick I have had 3 days off in 10 years. I go into work unless I am dying.
 
I'm very rarely ill, don't think i've been ill in 10 years or more.

Didn't stop me deciding i was entitled to sick days near the end of secondary school / college... ah the sleep i got in.


Not taken a sick day so far in my working career (4 months here 5 more months about a year before), and i'm not planning to unless i literally can't get out of bed.
 
My last place was 3 periods of sickness in 1 year you would get a sickness review, they would see how you/them could help reduce your time off etc etc.

5 periods, and there was a noticeable trend (say it was always for 1 or 2 days, either always a Friday or both a Friday and a Monday) you would get called in with HR and be issued with a disciplinary, unless you had doctors evidence or a damn good reason.

My new place, people seem to throw sickies all the time, and they don't get pulled up on it. No idea what the official stance is, need to find my contract!
 
Any more than 10 days a year sick days and the management reserve the right to not pay wages for any further sick days taken.

If I were to take a sick day either immediately before or after a holiday/bank holiday break then I must get a doctors certificate.

Four months?

I'm lucky if I go a month without a migraine but luckily only four or five a year hit when I'm due to go to work.

That's unenforceable - you can self certify for up to 7 days. If they tried taking disciplinary action against you for not producing a doctors note (or fit note as they are now called) you could take them to an employment tribunal - and you'd win.

I'm surprised you Union have challenged such a rule.

If i can count my last job, then 5 years give or take between sick days.

The thing that really grinds my gears about it though, is there are people that are off consistantly, every 3-4 months or so. Fair enough some people are more prone to illness, but on the other hand you get people who have the slightest hint of the cold come down with the flu.

There hasnt been a job yet, in which I have seen any staff awarded for not having a sick day over the year.

A little over 18 months ago, i got so fed up with a lot of people being off, I 'came down' with the same sickness bug, and had a day off with a few jars.

Its not exactly something I am proud off, but I dont think anyone could complain about me in only having 1 day off in ~ 7 years.
 
We used to have an attendance bonus draw at work where every period those who qualified, no sick, would be drawn out of a hat to win 1 of 3 £100's.

I won £100 once and the following week was GENUINELY off sick. of course no one believed me :D
 
6 weeks and 1/2 day
5 weeks for broken sternum
1 week food poisoning, coming out both ends for most of the week
1/2 day for knee injury at work

Not bad for 8 years full time and 7years part time.
Do people really get sick so often, or is it like most cases and just see Sick pay as extended AL allowance.
 
my immune system has always been pretty resilient, or i've had a high tolerance, either way i took my first sicky ever in my 11 years(i think) of working about 3 weeks ago, i've never really believed in taking sickies, always just grizzed through and got on with it despite how i felt, however, when i turned up to work and spewed 3 times the BSM made sure i went to the med centre:( told me to get down to the med centre before i infected the rest of the guys:( so I got the rest of the day off, but came back to work the next day.

it might sound pathetic however i feel taking a day off sick is like admitting defeat, showing weakness and all that BS.
but there we are, 1 sick day since i left high school:mad:
