Working in a 18+ slot/fruit machine arcade

Went for a informal chat/interview this morning and the whole time I was there no one came in to play so not sure how busy it gets (I should have asked!)

Yeah, that seems pointless for you, I can see the value of a paid to do nothing much job if you were otherwise short on cash and wanted time to study etc.. but you've got cash and plenty of time. Also, a security guard in a posh office is probably optimal for that.

One suggestion, if you're single, perhaps pick up a job at a pub, usually a good social scene with that sort of job, I worked part-time at my local as a teenager, eventually working behind the bar when I turned 18, we'd have lock-in parties after closing, staff trips to local clubs etc..

Why not try a hobby business of your own? NOT as in bet everything on some business, rather this doesn't need to take up much of your cash at all & you can pull the plug if it doesn't work out.

If you really want to be busy then buy a (small) fast food franchise, but I suspect you'd want something more chilled than that - you don't even have to start from scratch, there are lots of businesses out there for sale and websites listing them.

You could buy a food or an ice cream van and just work a few days a week for example - this doesn't need to cost much at all, you've got the cash to do it buy the food van or ice cream van second hand (gotta be quite low startup costs) and if it doesn't work out you can flog it to someone else.

You could open a specialist retail store in a cheap area perhaps, something hobby related and maybe just open it 3 days a week + online orders, this could very easily turn out to be loss-making though.

When I was a kid I took my hi-fi amp down to a local electronics store, the old guy there fixed it for me for like 50p or something, his shop was always quite quiet; I later learned he was basically a millionaire and owned the entire row of shops - the electronics store was essentially a hobby business for him.

Firstly congrats on your win :)

Secondly you're getting £10k a month and you want to go work in an arcade? Just why? What on Earth are you thinking?

Go travel the world for 6 months, you can easily live like a king for £3k/m in a lot of places. Then start looking at investments so you can make the money work for you. You have the freedom, dont just do nothing and waste it away working in an arcade..

When I first saw your win I already starting thinking what I would do if I was in your shoes. £5k/m into savings and £5k/m spending living life.

Yeah I agree it's crazy thinking that I'll go working in an arcade just to keep busy. I would like to start a business but if I do I might wait a couple of years until I've got some money built up first. Always fancied owning a convenience store / Premier shop type shop and they are usually gold mines if you have good passing footfall. :D Wouldn't mind getting into a couple of BTL properties too as a future retirement plan.

I'll probably get my house refurbished too, planning a couple of new extensions, nothing too elaborate just the single storey front extension knocked down and replaced and an upstairs bathroom put in at the back. Also a new kitchen as mine is dilapidated (like my old bathroom was :o).

I've never been big on holidays hence why I'm not in a rush to get away. Last holiday I had was in 2018 and that was only to Ireland.

I would think now you're financially sorted that you look into a career that you enjoy, I don't know what I would do without work but I enjoy what I do. Maybe quit your job, and now you can afford a decent career adviser really give it some thought. There'll be plenty of time for holidays and what not.

Working somewhere like an arcade just to get structure around your life is the wrong way to approach things IMHO. It will not be fulfilling and you will wither mentally over the years.

You have a wonderful opportunity to find what you love or to build a business. Travel has been suggested and I think that is a great idea. Spend a year traveling the world. Do it now while you are young and healthy.

Longer term the SFL will still be coming in but inflation long term will erode the value. So you should be investing it in some way. When you have finished traveling then either set an amount aside to invest monthly, or use that set monthly amount to start a business. Or possibly retrain for a satisfying career and leave all of the SFL for investments.

If you really don't want to travel, build a better career or start a business then live off the SFL and volunteer your time for charity to help others. This could be anything from driving elderly people to hospital (forget what the service is called), working in a hospital cafe, working at an animal sanctuary, volunteering to man calls at the samaritans, working in a charity shop, etc, etc, etc.

Find something fulfilling but which also brings you into contact with people so you still have social contact.

You seem to be wondering how to fill your time, rather than using this amazing opportunity to build the life you want.

I kinda get OP...have a sense of 'purpose' and still have a 'work social' life. I think I would be half tempted for a short while to test the waters.

@LeeUK - As said in the other thread, I have dreamt a lot about this kinda situation and I had the idea of trying lots of different classes. So cooking lessons, pottery, woodwork, gym classes or personal trainer - all random ideas to fill the day plus try new things. :)

If the kitchen is as bad as the bathroom was then do that sharpish. Can we have pics of the before and after too? :D

Between this thread and your car thread, it feels to me like you need some time to reset mentally - you're still thinking how you're used to thinking and that's not going to work long term for you.

You've won a fantastic long term income prize and your first thoughts have been to buy a decade old diesel BMW and get a part time job in a slot machine arcade or open a corner shop.

Your thinking and ambition needs to change IMO - I completely get still wanting a job but you have freedom to upskill, train, aim for whatever you want, start a business even - you have the luxury to aim for a job to stay fulfilled and stimulated not just to waste your time to try and pay the bills.

Take some time to think about what you really enjoy in life and the work / opportunities available around that - i'm certainly not advocating trying to retire and live a life of luxury just yet but don't squander such an opportunity by not expanding your thinking beyond the tedious rat race we're all used to.

On the flip side every time this lad opens his mouth on the forum he gets a lecture about how he is doing "wealthy" wrong. Who GAF if he works at a slot machine shop or has a decade old BMW diesel, it's not like it'll bankrupt him.

You're young... if you don't have kids then you may want to consider travelling for a few months and tasting some new ways of life.

Get yourself a project that will keep you busy (this is ultimately what gardening is to old people :D) or try setting yourself small goals that you can achieve on a daily/weekly/monthly basis e.g. install a new kitchen may be one, get the gutters unblocked may be another.

I wouldn't work in an arcade those places are LOUD when they're running full-tilt.
