World Cup Group B (England, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Sweden) **SPOILERS**

Crouch scored and Rooney changed the game :/

Yeah i know he scored, and in hindsight i would have subbed Owen because it meant we won. But at the time the subs were made I would have subbed Crouch for Rooney, not Owen. What happened after the subs is not wholly relevant because Owen wasn't on the pitch to compete.

And I don't think Rooney did a great deal physically. He had no shots etc, what he did seem to to do, however, was wake the team up a little and inspire confidence but whether that was in part to do with Lennon and the fact that time was running out is hard to say. And you can't blame Owen for the team not performing when he was on.

I maintain the fact that Owen did more than Crouch and Rooney physically and I think deserved to play till the end, more so than Crouch.

I very much disagree. Owen was poor yesterday and needed to come off. At least Crouch was linking up, getting involved and getting into the right positions.

Rooney sees passes other players don't. A couple slipped through and the game was turned. Players around him lifted their game. The mark of a master at work. Thats the natural ability he has.

I think you are giving Rooney way too much credit there; Lennon and Downing were more productive on the wings as they spreaded out the T & T defence. Rooney just got the run around he needed. As shown by the analysis at half time in the Argentina match, the reason Owen did nothing is cos we played the long ball for some stupid reason ALL the time. It was a disgrace and Sven / McClaren should be shouting at their team to stop playing that toilet football. An absolute disgrace. Infact Lampard probably had a worse game than Owen. He missed some absolute sitters but nobody has a go at him!

Owen has always produced when it matters and i see him doing the same in this world cup. People have the shortest of memories but he is Englands best goalscorer and always proves the doubters wrong.

always? what about the last two matches then where he's been useless in. Even if he scores in the next game, it still proves no one wrong, he's past it and has been for around 4 years. He's a decent goalscorer now, but certainly not world class - no better than craig bellamy.

yeah i agree he is nowhere the standard he was compared to when he was in France 98 but saying he is no better than craig bellamy is an insult.

Its been a bit longer than 2 games tbh mate.

As Pearce said yesterday on the telly, Rooney does the job Crouch is supposed to do far better than him, Owen plays better with Rooney.

Owen and Rooney as a pair are far more of a goal threat than crouch+ AN Other, not just because they both are far better finishers, they also both are far quicker, and have a much better understanding of where each other are.

As for the midfield, we looked better with Beckham playing rightback than we did with either Neville or Carragher, Lennon spread the play and drew players out with him opening up the space for the rest of the team.
Of course, i wouldnt go as far to say as to play Beckham at RB, but without him wasting the ball time and time again, we looked almost average.

Its got to be a midfield of Gerrard lampard Carrick Cole.
Beckham just doesnt cut it.

What I'd choose for the Sweden game:

-------------Robinson-------------
-Walcott--Walcott-Terry--Walcott-
-Walcott-Gerrard-Walcott-Walcott-
--------Rooney----Walcott--------

I think I'm on to a winner here lads.

To say Owen is finished is nothing short of stupid.
It is now 120 days since his injury and he has played barely 3 hours of football in that time.
He's not a kid anymore and cant retain the fitness Rooney can or create something out of nothing like him.
He cant boss and dictate a game like Gerrard , Beckham or Lampard are capable of.
He is a goal scorer , nowt else , and when there is little or no supply to him the end product is zero.

I seem to remember another centre forward getting the nations grief before a major competition almost 10 years ago to the day.
He didnt do too badly.

But to be fair Teddy Sheringham was a much better player than Owen is or ever will be...............
