I'm suprised so few people (including our esteemed Spuds
) have mentioned how well Carrick played yesterday. I thought his passing was excellent, and really set a lot of good movements off. If I could pick the team I wouldn't mind seeing a middle three (assuming the same 4-5-1 formation was kept) of Hargreaves (to do the dirty work Carrick doesn't like so much), Carrick (killer passes and freedom to roam more), and Lampard/Gerrard (to get forward and assist Rooney).
Personally, I didn't think we were that awful yesterday. Yes, it was tough watching, and yes, we didn't play particularly brilliantly, but we weren't OMGSACKROBBO bad, by any means. Ecuador were defensive, compact, and patient, and we had to play round them, which took effort. We didn't have Crouch on, and I think that forced us to play the ball along the ground instead of hoofing high balls up, and although it didn't always lead to much, I'd much rather see us play like that again than how we did against Paraguay. What cost us our lack of attacking chances was (a) a misfiring Joe Cole (lots of tricks, not always much from it), (b) Beckham not pushing forward enough, and (c) all of our midfielders ignoring Rooney's movement and calls for the first half.
We've not been great yes, but really I'm far more sick of people complaining because they expected us to win by 59 goals than how badly we actually did play. If you'd watched England matches before this tournament you might have noticed that we're very rarely, if ever, a comfortable, confident side for an entire game. Such is the way of things.
