Worst follow-up album ever?

I was coincidentally having this same discussion in relation to the Killers with my sis only yesterday.

For me Arcade Fire are another example. I thought Funeral was a truely exceptional record, fantastic original sound. Neon Bible I thought was dull, lacking inspiration, and despite a number of tries has failed to even be a 'grower'

Hell Is For Heroes- first album, absolutely stunning. Second album had one good song on it, and it was a re-recorded b-side that'd been previously relesaed. And it took them about 3 years to get round to releasing it too.

The Sisters of Mercy [...] Releasing the cack 'Vision Thing' after the masterpiece that was 'First and Last and Always' [...]
Well on the one hand, you're right in that Vision Thing was cack and FALAA was a masterpiece, but on the other you forgot that Floodland was in between them.

Still, even after the very patchy and badly-paced Floodland, Vision Thing was a pretty awful follow-up, yeah.

Didnt forget about it at all mate, i liked Floodland, i just wanted to go from one extreme to the other.

although i could mention 'Gift' and that was mince ...

Finch - Say Hello to Sunshine

What a mess :( First one had some cracking tracks, second album was a mess of misplaced screams and forgettable riffs :( think that's probably what made finch break up!

Ah, it didn't occur to me that you were applying a more liberal interpretation :)

I've never heard Gift, but I gather it was, shall we say, a political release rather than an artistic one. Sounds like I've not missed anything, anyway!

there was only one good song on it 'Giving Ground' but i believe this can be obtained elsewhere.....'Rain from Heaven' wasnt bad either

we could talk about 'The Fields of the Nephilim' i think thier older stuff was better than the earlier stuff !!

but i digress, and i dont want to mug the thread.

:)

Oh right, thought you were implying that Absolution was disco music :p

Incidentally I love both albums. Got some fantastic songs on them, and both work well as a whole. (in my opinion, of course!)

more than anything, I was inadvertently implying that I was having a bit of a thick day yesterday!

I wanted to love Absolution - the first song I heard was Stockholm Syndrome, and I love that song, I was so disappointed when the rest of the album wasn't of a similar ilk. Like you say, though, each to his own and all that!

I did just mean the follow-up to the first album (ie, the 2nd) but no biggy :)

There's been lots of poor follow-ups if we're not just looking at 2nd albums.

Prodigy after Jilted Generation
Radiohead after The Bends
Madonna after Like a Prayer
Michael Jackson after Bad
Happy Mondays after Pills, Thrills n Bellyaches
Moby after Play
U2 after The Joshua Tree

I could go on...
