Worst follow-up album ever?

From the topic I was gonna come in and top anything you said with 'The Killers', but as that's what you said I guess I can only agree.
*****.

The most recent Kings of Leon album is dull as hell, I love the first two albums but Because of The Times is just so boring and has no real life or feeling in there. IMO of course.

I think a lot of bands try to play it safe with their first album (or first big release album) and stay slightly more mainstream than they would like to. A few people have mentioned the stone roses and this is a good example. 2nd coming takes more 'getting into' than the stone roses-stone roses. On the first listen most people would prefer the 1st album. Nirvana and nevermind (i know 'bleach' came first) is quite a commercial album but 'in-utero' is far from commercial. At the time of release it got quite mixed reviews. Kurt Cobain said in a biography that this was the sound he had always wanted to create. Oh 1 more thing, im not knocking them, Nirvana have always been my favourite band :D

everything after Appetite for Destruction , GnR

Album wise, yes, song wise, no IMO.

They (or more precisely he) went a bit OTT with the whole double album thing. If he kept UYI to one album, and got rid of the filler, it would have been MUCH better - too much tosh (The Garden, My World, Get In The Ring etc WTF) but at the same time, a lot of great stuff in there.

IU was altered A LOT from the version he wanted to the version the studios wanted though (apparantly). He WANTED it to be uncommercial too, theres quite a lot of self parody in the album too. The thought thats gone into IU, and some of the lyrics are awesome, but it is a hard album to listen to, and some of the songs are slightly pointless (Tourettes?).

I love Stadium Arcadium for the record, absolutely adore it.

But you just can't compare it with albums such as 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' or 'By the Way' (In my opinion, of course). Oh, the best song on SA is Charlie.

hehe, probably my favourite album this year. i love it. :D

and on the subject of RHCP, everything after mother's milk sucks balls (imho). :)

I can't believe the posters in here who can't figure out what a 'Worst follow-up album ever' is.

Its dead easy -
An artist releases their FIRST superb album but the SECOND album is terrible.

A third album is also a follow up to their second album, and so on.

A lot of people seem to hate Out Of Exile.. I happen to love it. I loved all three of Audioslave's albums actually, really preferred them to Rage Against The Machine. Each to their own I suppose.

As for shocking follow-up albums.. I don't think I know any. I know some that have come out a fair while after the first and haven't been as good. Nothing like people have been mentioning springs to mind. I tend to enjoy most music that people dislike. :p

well gilly has already clarified he did mean 2nd albums only but then went on to suggest a few albums which didn't meet his original criteria so everyone has jumped in. :p

Well he must commit Hara Kiri and suspend himself.

I think you're right, I think this is the part where I assume that you are an idiot for having a different (and quite obviously wrong) opinion.......if that's ok with you? :)

Oh and although I still enjoy their other albums, nothing they have done since comes close to Rage Against the Machine's debut.

And another one, Rythym and Stealth by Leftfield, although it's not unlistenable or entirely terrible, when compared to Leftism it's pretty grim.

I didn't think much to Aphex Twins Ambient Works II either, although it was hugely sucessful so I'm sure a few of you will disagree.

I agree. I thought their first album was passable, but only because I love the instrumental section in Rage (how wrong does that sound?!), but I can't stand Chris Cornell. Not entirely sure what they were up to with the other albums, but I really disliked them! Didn't seem like the ballsy, rage-esque stuff I'm used to!

Fortunately, Chris Cornell was never in Rage Against the Machine

Rage's first album was more than passable :D

I meant Audioslave's first album with it's Rage-esque instrumental stuff

i thought that 'III sides to every story' was a load of mince compared to 'Pornografitti'

I'm the Statistical Outlier- I thought 3 Sides was their absolute best. Better in the full vinyl and tape version than the CD tho.

see here we go again. i actually prefer it over leftism. :p

can't think of any my own rubbish 2nd albums so i'll just mention björk instead. her first 4 albums are great (post and vespertine probably being my 2 favourite albums of all time by anyone). but medulla and volta are utter crap by comparision.

tbh, that's their only good album (pornograffiti) and I own them all (including best of, for some reason  ). Waiting for the punchline has a couple of alright tracks, but not brilliant.

The cheesiness of Pornograffiti also grates after a while..

Gone off them quite a bit..

mostly because of the lyrics,
Eg:
"so you want me to take it off
just to see what's
underneath my cloth
i'll show you i'm every
inch a man
measure all that you
think you can
...
naked, and i'm unashamed
naked, with no one to blame
naked, ya you want the truth
naked, here's my birthday suit
naked, naked, naked, naked"

Not great..

I still listen to a few songs regularly by them, namely "Lil' Jack Horny", "Am I Ever Going To Change?", "Cupid's dead (Horn Mix)" and "Tragic Comic".
