My wife records “Eastenders” and watches it when she feels like it.
Once in a Blue Moon I’ll be in the room, but I don’t watch it, it’s like background noise, doesn’t bother me.
Years ago she’d watch “Brookside”, but not religiously, which was kind of strange, as she’d run screaming into the night if her mother had “Coronation Street” on when we visited, my wife said that the Manchester accents grated on her, but that she viewed Scousers and their speech patterns as her Northern Cockney cousins.
She was even worse if “Emmerdale” came on while she was channel surfing, she said that “Emmerdale” accents made “Coronation Street” characters sound civilised.
I guess that being born and raised in South-East London, she feels at home with Cockney accents, but accents from north of Barnet are ewww! to her.
Strange really, as I, another dyed in the wool Londoner, can get along with any U.K. accent, although I’m not completely sold on the Birmingham and the Black Country ones.
