I've been wondering about this for awhile. Should i get a raptor for loading the operating system?

I understand the raptor x drives are unreliable, so id be going for the old 36gb/74gb drive.

The 74gb is supposedly quieter so id side with the 74gb model.

Match a raptor for windows loading times?

I do however like the price of the Samsung drive aswell.

I would be tempted to sell my Western Digital 320gb for the F1

Get a samsung 320GB F1...get two and RAID them... You won't be disappointed.

I've got the 750GB F1 which replaced a Raptor, I'm very happy with speed and quietness.

Yeah, well worth it. I noticed a good increase right across the board - game loading times and snappiness in Windows was much improved.

The 7,200RPM drives can beat the Raptor for transfer rates, but they will never get close to it's access times.

but they will never get close to it's access times.

And am i right in saying that access time is what makes Windows load faster because well....... it can access files faster?

A sound plan would be a raptor for os and a samsung f1 for storage and such.

I have a 150GIG raptor as boot drive.

And have been using one for yrs.

Would not go back to a 7200 windows drive.

Why have a big drive with your OS on?

Small fast drive for windows and apps.

Large drives for DATA.

I agree. I use my Raptor for the OS and Apps. Still has plenty of space left on it and it's very quick. Then I use a bigger drive for everything else. :) The 7200.10 and 7200.11 for example. :)

Id just like to say the RaptorX is not unreliable, but it does have a lower MTBF. I would recommend the 150Gb normal raptor. Unless you want a see through window.

I only have the raptor in my system. All my files / backups / music is stored on the server.

The answer is that in my personal opinion NO they are NOT worth it. I have just swapped from a Raptor 150GB to a Samsung Spinpoint F1 (single platter drive) and it's actually faster than the Raptor in almost all situations. Boot time difference is negligible, and burst/read/write speeds are higher... and the best thing it's half the price, about 5x quieter, and double the capacity! I don't notice the higher randome access times, Windows Vista still seems fast and responsive as it ever was. :)

Seriously, the Raptor 150GB was so loud it wasn't even funny, and caused huge vibrations. Raptors are so uneconomical I can't understand why people still buy them nowadays... they were once the fastest things a PC user could get, now they are being overshadowed in price and performance by much cheaper 7200rpm drives. The Raptor series needs updating. Badly.

i love my raptor 74gb, op only with aps and like everyone else here use large drive for everything else, i never understood why u would want so much space for operating system, some here i see with 2 x 320gb in raid even my mate got 2 x 500gb in raid but its no faster for op than my raptor

@ GregI, the OLD 8MB Raptors are slower than nearly every SATA300 drive now, you would need get a 16MB Raptor.

The Raptor X is only one with Window and even though its got a lower MTBF, it has same 5 year warrenty so mean nothing, just them covering themself incase of heat etc.

Looks like you will have to webnote them. iv had a look around and most companys are sold out of the 320. they have plenty of 750 F1's that arnt much more!

The 750's don't use the new platter technology though unfortunately... and aren't as fast. Plus twice the price, and too big for an OS drive really. The 320GB is in-stock in places still.

No idea, try sending them a webnote. It can be had elsewhere if you shop around though. :)

I sent them a webnote yesterday. Alas, this was the response;

"Dear Customer Dude,

Thank you for your webnote. Unfortunately we are currently not
planning on stocking this item. Once we do decide to stock this then we will
make this available on our website for pre-order.

Regards,

OCUK Dude"
