Hey chaps,

Say i get this SATA III-6Gbps card (Lycom PE-108) and buy a SATA III-6Gbps SSD drive would i get the full speed out of whatever SATA III-6Gbps SSD i choose or will my motherboard pci hold me back?

My motherboard is Gigabyte P55 US3L (Rev 2.3)

As you can see,my mobo only has Sata II 3gbps,No proper raid onboard and id like to have one larger SSD anyway.

thanks. ;)

I wouldn't count on it.

The motherboard spec. only states that the x16 speed slot is PCI-E 2.0.

If the x16 slot (x4 speed) and the x1 slot are only PCI-E 1.0 then the maximum bandwidth for the card would be 250MB/s.

Also on a less than £20 card the controller used isn't going to be amazing and is likely to offer far less bandwidth than you'd expect from a native SATA 3 port.

Just change your motherboard, by far the easiest and best solution. Will probably work out cheaper by the time you sell your current one on the MM.

Your putting a lot of effort into this :)

Why don't you just change the MB out for something that supports SATA III and be done with it?

I know :D

Il create a thread in the wanted section and see what comes of it,Dont really want to be spending a whole lot on a new 1156 mobo when its already a dead socket.:p

thanks for your help chaps.:)

Then put up with SATA II speed till you upgrade. You still get the benefit of having something that's faster than any mechanical drive.

I would buy new for the fall back of a warranty that needs no mucking about with a "third party" to be honest.

With selling yours, by which means you deem, your looking at a upgrade of about 50 - 60 quid that will keep your "dead socket" up to date and able to use all the latest tech for at least the next 3 years.

Probably why I've resisted the "geek rush" with Sandybridge etc etc.
