would you go for this interview

OK, you need to fill us in a bit more, you say it would be a great job, I'm confused as to why a networking job in France which pays a pretty average if not low wage is great?

I'm still firmly in the NO camp :)

Perhaps they'll refund the costs when you sign on the dotted line.

That's how I'd do it.. otherwise I'd say go, you can always go on a mini break to Paris :D

i didnt say it wasnt for blizzard, only its not a GM job :)

Its a great job as its working for a firm that makes 2 games i love and a chance to see and work for them on the other side of the game, something i would like to do.

My issue is with them saying, sure we like you, come down here for an all day interview and you pay all costs... The job doesnt pay that much, but it isnt the money that i like about it, its the fact im working on a network for a large firm supporting something i have a passion for, games! and computers...

To be fair, the wage is about 33% of what i earn now. only now i am working away from home, doing a job i would like to quit as im reduced to supporting users as the helpdesk team i work with are not worth talking too and the system they have in place is arcaic at best. The money, while nice to have each week into my account, only helps so far. What i yearn for is a challange, and i think this may have it.

Not sure if anyone here understands what i mean, but hope you do, will prob go for the interview and see what the score is, best case is i get hired, show im good at what i do and after 6-12 months get to go to the USA. worst case, i get a 3 day break in France and a look at Blizzard office in France..

arr well, tis nothing but money, although that 24" dell screen is about the same price, hmmmmmmmm

Will let you all know how i get on lol..

TY for the input.

<ColiN>

PS - if i can, im nerfing bloody warlocks!

Id say yes, if they took the time to ring you and asked you to leave the country for an interview, shows they are pretty kene. Either that or they are just pulling your plonker for the sake of wasting their time and your time and money. (which i doubt)

I dont think i made my main point quite clear enough in my first reply. Why would you want to work for a company that puts people in this position? If you're not even working for them and they're taking advantage of their reputation to cut corners, who knows what they'd do if you actually start work for them? I think it speaks volumes about the company if they refuse to pay anything towards such a weighty sum. £450 to them, is nothing. £450 to you is a big deal. If they dont recognise that then they're probably not the great company you think they are.

I definitely understand where you're coming from, why do a job if you don't like it, I would much rather be in a job i liked and paid pittance than a job i hated...

However I'm not sure if you want this job for the right reasons, if the only reason for you doing this is because it is Blizzard then you will ultimately regret it, its not going to be a magical wonderland and the working conditions you don't know about really... It might be fun for the first few weeks, but you will tire of it... And I'm not sure where you have the information about going to the US from, is this something they have told you will happen?

At the end of the day you should make your own decision, but make it for the right reasons... You can find many jobs for many companies in the UK that will give you the same challenge and will not ask you to pop over to France for an interview. If it is just because you want to work for blizzard then i think its a bad idea personally.

But, hey maybe it would be fun working abroad maybe it might be what you need, but still I'd take the dell lol

Pretty poor wage to be going to though? 33% of your current wage . How is this going to effect your lifestyle... and your arguement of you get to work for a company that makes a game you like...... thats all great but are you going to actually see / do anything that involves the game or are you going to be in a generic cubicle/office like the many other jobs. And what happens when you become bored of there Games and you still find your self pulling out the English - French dictionary strugling to buy lunch. ( unless you know french )

£15k pa is pretty poor for someone of your age and experience, ok, you love computers and games and this is the perfect opportunity for you, i wouldnt do it.

While money isnt everything but as you said its a 3rd of your current income and the drop is substantial!

In the end its up to you. Good luck no matter what you choose.

It appears to me that you are getting somewhat blinded through your passion for games that this company makes. If you look at the facts:

The wage is a 1/3rd of what you are currently on

The company expects you to pay all travel expenses, which speaks a lot for the kind of company they are likely to be. Every interview I have been invited to has at least contributed to any expenses.

It involves travelling to a different country, which will eat a lot of money in terms of relocation.

This all adds up to a very poor job opportunity to me. If you are unhappy in your current job then fine look for a new one, but not one with a third of the wage. You could just work two days a week in your current job and take the same home!

If you are earning 45k at the moment and would take a 30k pay cut you are crazy.

imho.

p.s. if you do go, for pity's sake, make them pay. They are ripping the **** if they wont pay and I wouldn't want to work for them if that is the case.

p.p.s. Good luck and can I have your old job :p

Any company should really be paying your expenses to attend an interview, especially in a situation like this.

I agree with this however they may have different practices in France?

Personally I'd go for it. They don't invite you all the way to Vezilly or wherever it is unless they're proper interested and lets face it, who wouldn't want to work for Blizzard. Plus you'd be living a short ride away from Paris.

P.S. Nerf locks plzthxta

Well, ive slept on it, read the info here and posted them an email saying what the costs would be and how about some recompence for my time and travel costs.

Will see what they say, but i think in the light of another day, id still want to work for them, not just as its blizzard, but tis a challange id love to take on, doing a job in any games company would be fun i think, only one i know taking on network people at the mo is blizzard though.

Still, will see what happens today with my request.

Colin

Good move. :)

If they're going to make you pay expenses for your interview, imagine how they'll treat you once you've signed a contract. Most games companies treat their staff like crap.

I would do virtually anything to get a job in France. Regardless, a company expecting you to pay the costs to get to an interview is not on, but I'd expect nothing less of Blizzard.

I wouldnt do it, not a chance. Ok so you dont like your job but it pays well, a drop of 30k pa is massive, i certainly wouldnt do it just to work for a company that did things i was interested in. The pay does seem low but what are the possibilities of increases over the years, is it even possible to get to 25k there never miind 45k!

I like junk food, but that doesn't mean I want to work for KFC/Burger King/McD's etc.

This move would only begin to make sense if they were providing fully paid for accomodation and living expenses (meals, company car, petrol).
