Would you SLAP your child..?

wooden spoon to the butt cheek is what I was bought up on, probably 'had' it about 5 times ever..

don't #### with the spoon :)

also, my primary school teachers used to smack kids on the butt if they were really bad

maintains respect imo

I have never found it nessasary. If your voice can not convey your disatisfaction and make you chilren behave, you are doing something very wrong.
You are fortunate if you have children that will never stray off to find their own friends, smoke, do drugs, get in fights, or invoke teenage pregnancy just because of the sound of your voice. You are one of the very rare parents who make it more difficult for others to raise their children -- in a manner that is necessary for that child's development -- to prevent them from doing such things and becoming a burden on society later in life. Kudos to you -- you should be proud.

I would never smack my children.

Can I ask why? What methods of discipline would you use instead? Say for example in this situation:

Your child of 5 years old has just smeared chocolate cake into your brand new carpet, TV and couch despite being repeatedly told that he/she was not allowed a slice until after dinner.

A little extreme maybe, but would be interested to see how you'd handle a pretty severe case of child disobedience and misbehaviour without resorting to smacking.

lets say your child if 14 and steals money from your wallet/purse to buy ciggys and or alchohol/drugs.

you wouldnt smack them with a slipper/wooden spoon? its no suprise we have so many unruly teenage kids getting drunk/taking drugs and making some peoples lives a missery

I am extremely proud of my children.

At 14? Probably would still get the same treatment in my house tbh, if they want to be disobedient and misbehave like children then why not treat them that way? If anything there's probably more humiliation in punishing a 14 year old who wants to be seen as "more grown up" like a child.

Anyway, and more reasonably the thing with 14 year olds though is there's more you can use as a means of punishment, grounding for example. You can't ground a 5 year old who isn't allowed out on his/her own anyway.

It's horses for courses, depends on the child, what they've done and how they'd react to certain punsihments. i.e smacking isn't always appropriate when something more suited could carry more weight.

make them eat the whole packet tbh :p
Again, proper parenting. The punishment should fit the crime, as others have said before.

First time I swore in front of my parents (10 years old), a bar of soap was dragged across my front teeth. The taste was horendous. Surely I never swore in front of them or any other adult for the rest of my childhood, and still avoid it (at 38 years old) if possible.

A classic example is the screaming child in a restaurant. 5-star or dive, it doesn't matter. Nobody wants to hear it. When the parent attempts to calm the child by saying, "Now, if you don't stop you're going to get a time out" the child keeps pressing. They know not to stop until the "vocal" parent finally gives in.

Now, if the parent bends the child over and gives them something to cry about, I bet everyone in the restaurant will have a smile. Except for the one, of course, that ruins it all for the rest of us and either complain to management or call the police.

Corporal punishment used correctly is an essential learning tool for a child.

It is hardly essential. I know quite a few well adjusted adults that were never hit as children.

Hopefully you are in a position where your five year old wouldn't do that. By five they should already know it is wrong to make such a mess. You are pretty much intervening far too late in this circumstance. So pretty hard to say what I would do in the above situation.

Firstly I would try to remain calm. Losing your temper to a five year old isn't going to help. What is left of the cake would be confiscated of course, the child would be told in a firm voice exactly what they had done wrong, they would immediately be sent to their room and any priviliges coming their way would be cancelled and they would know exactly why. If they were capable they would also be made to clean up the mess before being sent to their room.

Do you think the parents of unruly children are likely to be the ones that don't hit their child or more likely the ones that do little to actually bring up their child correctly?

I think parents of unruly children would be unbalanced ones that don't know where their own boundaries are. I feel perfectly secure and confident in my abilities as a parent and believe that if I choose to smack my child that I will choose correctly.

Saying that you will never smack a child is naive IMO. Saying that you definitely will is just as bad. Saying that you will if occasion demands it and judging accurately each situation is surely the only way to answer this question.

I pretty much agree with you to be honest. I was just disagreeing with the statement that parents that dont hit their kids are to blame for unruly children.

They are unruly due to lack of discipline and have no desire to learn from their mistakes - in this instance proper discipline is needed and the only way to get suitable disclipline has already been mentioned amny times.
