I live with 3 other people and two of them are a couple. They are always on their laptops whilst watching a film or one is on their laptop and the other isn't. I make jokes about them never leaving the house as they simply never do unless it's for work or to go for a food shop on thursdays. Every day from about 6pm they are in front of their laptops and the same ALL weekend.

I personally couldn't live like that, but they seem loved up when not sitting on the sofa. Does it bother me? Hell no as it's not me or my GF!! Why do you care what another couple is doing? I've been to many people's houses where there are a couple watching a film and one is on a laptop so it's not too uncommon.

If I'm watching a film with my GF which I want to see too I don't use a laptop as I want to see the film. If its a film I've seen loads of times but she wants to watch it again, I will probably grab the laptop and snuggle up with it. Why should I go and sit in my room to do it? I have no interest in the film but its still more sociable to sit next to the person when I'm browsing the web than to go next door just because I'm on a laptop. That would just be weird!
 
I'm quite amused at some of the people suggesting it's normal to sit on your laptop during an entire film if it's something you haven't seen before and it's meant to be 'your time together.'

Then again, some relationships really are pretty daft when you witness them.

I lived with people like that for a year when at uni. I didn't renew the lease when asked. I've really got into films over the last year and when my girlfriend and I can't agree we compromise. Some films she recommends end up being pretty good like Into the wild and 500 days of summer. I'm into more Coen brothers and Hitchcock type films but she often likes them. Like I said compromise is key.

that's actually a good point. no i don't take my laptop to the cinema and i woujldn't even if i could. the reason is because when going to the cinema i see that as far more entertaining as it's a huge screen, big sound etc so a much more "eventful" experience, where as sitting at home to watch a movie to me is very dull on it's own even if it's a great movie like lotr (which funnily enough i have on right now whilst on my pc). it feels like a complete waste of time to just sit there for 2.5 hours doing nothing so i also go on my pc/laptop and do work.

i agree clicking (why they dont make a silent mouse idk) and typing can be distracting and it's unfair to do this if someone else is in the room.

Haha, sure he didn't 'choose' to watch to stop you moaning, not that I would ever suggest you would do that :D.

Only reasons to be using a laptop would be boredom with the film or because he was waiting for something on the laptop like football results, latest prawn movie download to finish or a message for a hot chick he had been chatting up on the internet.

Seriously, if he was interested in the film then the laptop would not be on. Yes it is quite rude.

Bit like the wife telling me she is too tired for 'humpy bumpy' and then sits there in bed until the early hours watching soap operas ;).

It would really fall into that "it all depends on the situation" sort of thing. If it is movie night then no, the whole point is to spend some time together watching a movie. If it is just a random movie put on because there is nothing on TV then I wouldn't have a problem either way.
 
Personally I wouldn't care either way, but my g/f would probably moan if if I went on the laptop, so I'd watch the film even if it was complete cack (anything for a quiet life).

Sounds like you need a better home cinema setup.

I hate going to the cinema, sitting in a crappy chair for 2.5 hours, feeling guilty for going up and having a pee, then missing part of the film because I got up and had a pee, paying through the nose for tickets, food, drink and the chance of sitting behind someone with huge hair.

No thanks.

tbh my GF does this while watching stuff I don't want to see,
but if I want to put something else on then it's OH NO!
if it's the other way around I get an ear full!
 
I use my laptop a lot while I'm watching the TV with my gf, but if it was a film or a decent program (i.e. not a soap or cooking show) she'd asked me to watch with her and I'd agreed, then yeah I'd put the laptop down. Mind you, she's almost as bad with her iPhone..
 
Then wife watches a load of dross that will mean I sit next to her using my laptop.
This covers Sex and the city, House, One tree hill etc. I can happily ignore those.
Gossip Girl, however, makes me angry and I have to leave the room.

If we are watching a film together then the laptop is away and we actually watch the film (unless she falls asleep as often happens)
