WP8.1

Is there any way to add apps to the notifcation and action centre so i can customise the alert sound for it? I had twitter using a totally different sound a while back but the app isn't showing in that list for some reason, only store, emails, outlook, and phone. Or is there some other way of changing sounds for other apps?

Not sure this is the place to ask but I'm sure you'll have your opinions :) It's about time I moved on from my Samsung Galaxy S which after ~4.5 years is long in the tooth. I don't think I'll go for Android on my replacement phone and definitely not iOS. My partner got a Lumia 725 a few months back and I've been very impressed with WP since.

As I upgrade rarely I prefer to buy the best model available at the time, in this case I'd go for a Microsoft flagship. It seems to me that this is a 930 at the moment. Other than the lack of glance screen, which appears to be a hardware limitation and a feature the phone will not get, the device looks great. I am, however, a little concerned given it's time on the market, that a new WP flagship will be released shortly after purchase.

So, can somebody summarise what is on the horizon for WP in terms of new hardware?

I'll be waiting *at least* another month before purchase as I want to see what the Ubuntu Touch OS has to say for itself (the main reason I've put off the upgrade for so long is the anticipated Ubuntu phone).

So, if I go down the WP route... 930 or wait for a flagship? Any idea when? And what new features/specs are expected?

God knows, Rasta. The Lumia was a good pick in 2013 but Microsoft has left it to go stale. With windows 10 coming up, there should be buzz by now about the super awesome things the next windows phone will do, but as it is they are more concerned with rebranding away from Nokia than telling us what they are up to.

My wife is due an upgrade on her Lumia 720 from 2 years ago, and I honestly have no idea what to recommend. Apple is a cult, android is fragmented with slow carrier-dependant updates and windows phone is going nowhere slowly with the weakest App Store.

I just can't see a new flagship phone till w10 release which is likely Oct/Nov, imo wrong strategy by MS. But there we go. Wait and see what is said in the 21st, we might getter a better idea, or we might not.

Also rumours that they are working on automatic sleep detection, to silence the phone. I would love this, as sleep pattern changes so often I cba to change quite hours several tomes a week.

Thanks for the replies. What is happening on the 21st?

It's always impossible to know when the 'right' time to buy is. It's easy to know when the 'wrong' time is... Usually the moment you've hit the buy button!!

MS conference about w10, where we are expecting a big update to w10 preview and information and a preview to WP10. Kicks off at 5pm.

Right time is when you have the money, otherwise you are always waiting. Personally not much point to high end wp8, unless there's something you specifically want. Get a 735/830 and then see what wp10 releases are at the end of the year. They've also said all wp8 phones will get wp10, which is good and they'll have big back lash if they don't do that.

Well, if all WP8 phones will get WP10, then buying a higher-end phone now is not unreasonable. But I take the point. The only compelling reason for a high-end phone might be for the camera.

I've been watching 830s being pulled from sale all over the World, rumour is MS are trying to avoid the backlash it got from selling WP7 phones right up to when WP8 was released and there'll be a WP10 phone released Q2.

It's very very unlikey to happen q2, it's based like wp8 on windows. Windows 10 is no where near finalised and won't be released till q4, q3 at a big outside bet..

Wp7 wasn't based on windows, it was windows mobile renamed, which was a totally different os and code.

Any reason they have been pulling it from sale ? not seen it mentioned any where myself, it's a great phone and i'm very happy with mine.

Me too, My 830 is probly the best phone I've had for a long time! I've not seen anything about it being 'Pulled' from shops!!!

I tried to get an 830 from EE about 2 weeks ago and they said they had none and weren't getting any more in stock.

Saw on Reddit people complaining that the same from various other countries.

No idea why, guess we'll find out more on the 21st. Very strange they're pulling the 830 from sale considering it's only 3 or 4 months old.

They aren't pulling it, certain carriers may pull it for there own reasons. Still get it from amazon, CPW etc.

Yes - if it hasn't sold well, they simply may not want to re-stock. Or they may have off-loaded excess stock (see below)

I bought my 625 over 12 mths ago from the auction site, and it was excess Virgin stock sold by this other company in generic boxes. Clearly Virgin didn't want it to be overtly identified as their unwanted stock, but going into the phone details the carrier was identified. Unbeknown to me the downside was, because Virgin don't have 4G, they had disabled 4G. I had to flash the phone with UK retail firmware to get it back. A lesson learnt there !!
