Wtf?

Got a letter in the post today from TV licensing. They have been hassling me for yonks in regards buying a TV license threatening court blah blah which I have duly ignored.

However I have just bought a TV from a high street shop (using as a monitor, I don't want or ever watch TV).

However today they had a detailed letter saying the xxxxxx (the name of the shop) had informed them that I had purchased a TV. They included a load of details etc.

Bit cheeky isn't it, the shop telling TV licensing such information.

I take it I still can carry on ignoring them?

All shops that sell TVs are legally held to give over your information when you buy a television - This is why if you pay cash, you must hand over your address and other details etc.

all shops do that to stop people (like you?) not paying for a TV licence. Sadly it doesn't matter if you don't watch TV. Has a TV? need a TV licence

Nope this is wrong and incorrect.

If you own a TV you DO NOT need to buy a license. You can do what you wish with the TV, ie a monitor and not have to worry.

As long as you do not watch programmes being broadcasted LIVE at the time on tv you do not need a license.

You can watch the programmes AFTER its broadcasted on the internet, ie iPlayer and any on demand services, since it is not being broadcasted LIVE.

To be honest, I wouldnt want to pay for a license for the crap they put on the BBC channels. Really? I want to give my money so they can have idiots like Johnathan Ross talk a load of rubbish?

I rather donate the money to some charity every now and again then give my money to people like them. Again theres loads of stories how the BBC actually has TOO much money which they splash out on crap, and personal things. Its in the news...

I can remember filling in the forms for TV licencing when selling TV's in the early 80's I think it's always been a legal requirement for shops.

?

He said he's using it as a monitor, no need for a licence.

I've got a TV but I don't watch TV

If you've got a television but you don't watch broadcast TV on it then you can use it without needing a TV licence. For example, if you only use it for watching DVDs or a games console then it's perfectly legal not to have a TV licence.
However, you need to make sure that it's not capable of receiving a TV signal. That doesn't simply mean destroying the tuning part of your TV. The TV Licensing Officer - and courts - will struggle to believe you if the aerial is still plugged into the back of the TV.

Use this online declaration form to say you don't need one

-If you do watch TV however, get one

I had this letter after buying a new TV for the living room in January. Can't say I was surprised that I received a letter a few weeks later from the T.V license people but still a bit annoyed that is how it has to go down.

It actually served as a good reminder though as it was a new house for me and I was still sorting out the mountain of bills and stuff that needed doing...

If it broke wouldn't you just take the TV back and ask for it to be replaced? There's no need to ever involve your home address in the replacement process?

I'm not condoning doing this (our household has a valid licence as we watch a lot of TV) but it just seems pretty easy to abuse?

tell them that you are not paying to be brainwashed and that if they harass you, you will sue them.

last house i was in, they kept coming round, they wanted to come in and look around the house, i told them gtfo.

one night a big black guy in a suit, came around with a peice of paper saying he had a warrant to search the house. we don't want tv and just go on pcs and download etc. so he looked serious, i let him in, while he was looking around the house i was telling him how the tv is brainwashing people and how i wouldn't watch it if you paid me. etc

TBH if I was doing my job and someone informed me about how TV is brainwashing me I'd think the person was a bit of a wierdo!

If you sell a device capable of receiving terrestrial television signals (built in tuner) then you have to take that information from the purchaser or end up in a hell of allot of trouble.

TV licensing Authority have no legal powers to enter a property unless invited.

You do not need a TV licence if you are not using the services irrespective if you are using the TV(monitor for computer/DVD-player.
