WWIIO: Battleground Europe

Just a heads up for anyone interested, the 1.30 patch has been released. Most of the work has been for the China release but there are some new planes. From the readme:

The Bf109F-1 is added to appear in tier 1 as the high ranked German fighter, replacing the Bf109E-4 which has had to be carried over from tier 0 up until now. It is faster than the Bf109E-4, climbs better and has a single nose mounted 20mm cannon in place of the two wing mounted cannons of the E-4 variant.

The Spitfire IIb replaces the Spitfire Ib in tier 1 as the high ranked British fighter. It is faster, and climbs better than the Spitfire Ib but is otherwise very similar. The Bf110F-B replaces the Bf110C-4/B as the tier 2 German fighter bomber. It is faster and climbs better than the old Bf110C-4/B, and has an improved gun package. This brings it more into competitive alignment with the British Hurricane IIC and French Bell Mle.14a, while they both outclass the Bf110F-B as a turn fighter the German plane has a better bomb load and probably the best ammunition load out with 400 rounds of the higher velocity MG151 20mm. The Bf110F-B also has improved pilot armour.

An issue with excessive oil consumption in the engines of the He-111 was also cured so that it no longer runs out of oil before it runs out of fuel.

Vehicles:

- Range finders now report in yards and meters
- Fixed several Panzer gun sights that were not aligned correctly
- Removed hatch and canopy controls from all AT and AA guns
- Fixed PzIIIF turret coax MG ammo counter
- Fixed some texture issues on the Panhard
- Fixed long range visibility issues with Flak 36
- Spit IIb now shows vertical stab in the virtual cockpit
- Addressed a long standing HE issue with concussive damage to tank crews under very specific conditions

Critical Secondaries for Tanks:

- All tanks that are tracked both sides from major damage (destruction) of drive and idler sprockets will award a kill to the shooter
- All tanks that are tracked both sides resulting from loss of the track itself but without the destruction of drive and idler sprockets will not award kills to the shooter for that track loss
- All wheeled and half track vehicles will award kills for the collapse of one side of the vehicle resulting in the vehicle being unable to drive further
- All wheeled and half track vehicles are no longer able to be driven on 3 wheels after taking catastrophic damage to 1 wheel

The e-gift offer is still running if anyone fancies a free months play. Email me with name and email addy (that hasn't been used before) and I'll get one sent out to you.

The thing with the new patch is that it has a lot of improvements that can't be seen. It basically lets them put a LOT of new stuff in game that can be seen and they'll be doing that (and have been doing so in the background) for 1.31 :)

Yeah I did know about all the unseen stuff that will hopefully lead to other improvements. It's just the new toys are more interesting. ;)

I've been playing this game since last October now and I'm well and truly hooked. Probably the reason why I not on these here forums much now!

I love shooting the Bofors and whilst I certainly not the best I have managed to get both French and Brit personas in top 100 for aa gunning this campaign!

I still maintain that this game is the greatest I've ever played but is probably best suited to the more mature player. If anyone would like for me to send them a free 1 month gift pass then please email in trust.

I reckon the following clip gives an excellent insight into the depth this game has. Read the uploader's description of the vid to understand what he demonstrating.

Still the best game I've ever played and can't believe that more from OcUK are not as obsessed with it as I am:

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/0...ive-cornered-rat-talks-longevity-simulations/

I've played all the games with pretty graphics but still not found anything to beat this game.

Take advantage of the 2 week trial, learning curve is steep so don't be afraid to communicate. Above all, give it a chance - it is truly epic.

The game is gathering speed again, there have been some major updates to terrain, game play and now infantry.

If you've never checked it out you must and if you havent played for while get back in a take another look.

Gave it another go a month or so back and unless you know about the updates it's still very hard to notice the new visuals as it still looks very outdated although the game play is still the same as it allways was!

Is there still massive lag when trying to shoot someone at close range (within 5m)? I haven't played for about year and iirc it was almost impossible to hit someone with a rifle at that range.

That said if you got in with a good bunch (40comm) and got your AT gun towed into a good position much fun was had blasting away at filthy axis scummy panzers. That and parachuting onto an objective with 50 other players, good times.

BTW do you still get horribly base camped? Where 16 tanks surround your spawn point(s)?

Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of the game and to celebrate Cornered Rat announced a new patch bringing the Americans into the game and a new play option. At last, a good reason to play Axis. ;)

Here's what they said:

Today marks the 10th anniversary of continuous operation of WWII Online and we are excited and proud to announce the addition of U.S. Forces and a new scenario-based game play option called, "Rapid Action" (R.A.). U.S. Forces will first be featured in the "D-Day" Rapid Action scenario pack and as part of a campaign special event.

For the past several months we have been working on re-writing several of the key systems that make the game work behind the scenes. Many of you have read about this work in recent development updates. This work was required not only to improve the update (host/client) and scoring systems for campaign play but also expand our tools for running scenario/special events with unique rules.

In addition, we have been hard at work evolving our terrain system to create new, highly detailed play areas for R.A. scenarios. To kick-off these new systems and features we have produced the first of many unit and weapon sets that feature the U.S. forces from the WWII era.

U.S. Infantry

* M1911 Colt Automatic Pistol
* M1 Garand Semiautomatic Rifle
* M1A1 Thompson SMG
* M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle
* M1903 Springfield Sniper Rifle

German Infantry

* GeW.43 Semiautomatic Rifle

Beginning with v1.34, a new game UI option will allow players to choose "Campaign" or "Rapid Action" (R.A.) game play. R.A. is our title for scenarios featuring new, custom terrain maps. These scenarios can be created any time using featured maps and can be joined at any time.

R.A. will offer games like Death Match, King of the Hill, single and two stage objectives and more. All will include the new scoring system with real-time events such as player/team points, streaks, objective points and more.

These custom scenarios, utilizing the same simulation-based play found in the campaign will provide instant and frantic action for players who want all the best of WWIIOL at a faster pace or as a break after those 4 hour siege battles found in the campaign.

Rapid Action- "D-Day Pack"

Our first R.A. scenario pack contains 3 unique maps designed around the Allied invasion in June 1944.

"Dog Green" - Relive the beach landing on June 6th in a huge terrain modeled from satellite data, Allied maps, German records and hundreds of photos. This map includes the actual landscape and every bunker, trench, minefield and beach obstacle found at "Dog Green". Will the Americans once again push the Germans back and capture the Vierville Draw? Now you can play either side as many times as you want to enjoy all the action.

"Le Pont du Mal" - In this scenario, an American infantry unit is trying to capture a vital bridge near a French town. The Germans make a hasty defense and are desperate to retain control. Can the Germans hold off the Americans until they are re-enforced?

"River Run" - With both the north and south bridges leading into the town destroyed, the Germans now must engage in a house to house fight with an American unit to see who will be victorious for control of the town. This map includes a special feature for the side that can keep someone alive in the church bell tower. This scenario will certainly earn the title, "Rapid Action".

Campaign Special Event- "The Battle for Aachen"

Our first campaign special event will be a recreation, "Battle for Aachen". The following is a synopsis;

The Allies have moved swiftly across France after their breakout from the Normandy beach head. The Germans, having been rolled back to the very borders of Germany itself, make their biggest stand to date at Aachen, the first major German city to come under Allied threat from the American forces readying themselves to invade Germany. The rapid advance of the Allied forces has stretched their supply lines to the maximum. The Germans have lost most of their equipment in the headlong retreat across France. Both sides will be depending on the upcoming attack at Aachen to influence their fortunes of war and their states of supply.

The schedule and details of this special event will become available in the coming weeks.

1.34 has been in extensive testing for several months and we will be providing a lot more information and updates on availability of this upgrade in the coming days.

We hope all players, past and present will join us in our excitement of this next milestone in the history of this wonderful project.
