X-Com 2 - Announced

Are there still performance issues with this or have they been patched yet? Also heard level load times were long?

I loved XCOM and will definitely get this at some stage.

Performance issues are definately there, dropped my res to 1440x900 and most settings to medium on a 670/3570k 4GHz and the framerate is high but there's a ton of stuttering and fps drops for no apparent reason. Load times can be circumvented by enabling caps lock once the loading screen starts and the game instantly loads perfectly... If that isn't sign of optimization issues nothing is. :p

Okay, after a step down to Normal/Ironman and adapting to the new mechanics, I'm now getting to grips with Commander difficulty. Still haven't seen anything worse than Mutons yet on any campaign! :D

For the most part I do like the timers now, but only when I have 5 or 6 man squads. You get more options, but it still sticks you in that horrible "I have to do this now and it's not going to end well..." position. However, the 'oh yeah' moment when you complete the objective on the final turn is very rewarding. I try not to think about the failure's!

The downside of the games near constant push to finish is that with only a 4 man team and no skills, I think getting a campaign up and running is as much to do with luck than anything.

Being ill with a cold since Monday hasn't helped my play time :(, but so far I'm giving it a thumbs up.

While the frame rate drops can be annoying I wouldn't say they really affect the game in a negative way, but the occasional animation glitches can be pretty annoying. I wasn't finding load times to be a massive issue but I'll try that caps lock thing later.

This is interesting a friend was talking to me about xcom2 and thought the hit % is not accurate.
So I've been testing it, I got to a point where i was aimed at a target and my hit chance was 53%, I saved and took the shot. 20 tries.... after reloading over and over, only hit it 2 times

Hmm, the game has a seed that's created with each step of each soldiers turn that determines who they can hit and who they can't, saving and reloading will never make a missed shot hit, unless you do things differently before shooting such as going to a different tile or making the squadmates before the shooter carry out their moves differently.

Yeah that's the way I understood it, would have expected the outcome to be the same every time, not sure why it changed twice?

I remember once with EU I sat with a piece of paper and jotted down the percentage for every shot and whether it hit, did this for about 50 turns or so and while I didn't analyse it in detail I did come to the conclusion that the game wasn't purposefully screwing me. Although playing last night I really felt it was...

EDIT - Whether that's how it works or not, it definitely is NOT how it works with hacking. I got a different outcome after saving right before the hack attempt and reloading, and with a 53% chance I was successful once in 10 attempts. My successful attempt was the first time, which makes me wonder if I was being punished for reloading....?

Maybe Veteran without Ironman was a bit too easy.

Note - Not really much save-scumming going on here, other than a few accidents where my mouse cursor was on the wrong square whilst moving.

So mind control is fun! :p

Wish I took a screenshot of that screen when I completed legend ironman. :(

As some have said, the hit/miss is already saved before you take a shot. The way to SLIGHTLY game this is to do things in a different order.

E.g:

Your grenadier takes a shot with 60% chance, hits, there's 3 health left on the muton that's about to make a fatal hole in your specialist he's got flanked.

The ranger steps up, muton blocks, counters and kidney punches the ranger for 5 damage at no loss to it's own remaining health.

You reload.

This time, ranger first. Ranger crits, near one-shots the muton, 2 health remaining.

Grenadier takes his shot again, same 60% chance. This time gets a glancing, muton still dies, much rejoicing.

Hopefully the example makes it a bit clearer. The "chance" is randomised based on certain actions, the same in the same order will give the same result. The same in a different order are different actions so different random numbers in the background :)

Finished Veteran campaign after just under 40 hours then straight into a game of Veteran Ironman. If that isn't a testament to a great game despite some ropey performance in places and a few bugs I don't know what is :p

Said Ironman game looks like a bust now after a bug meant my non phantom ranger was showing as concealed when he clearly wasn't and thus activated two distant packs which messed me up good

I loved XCOM and will definitely get this at some stage.

Loading times are quite long, much longer than the previous game. But the maps are much bigger and procedurally generated. I moved the game to an SSD and it's not to bad.

Anything over 2x MSAA and the game seems to run like crap no matter what though. Also it seems to slow down after playing for a while, which is a symptom of a memory leak. Theres a number of other bugs too.

I have found that its slowing down and hanging the longer I play
firaxis are working on fixes from what I heard

OK bugs sound minor and after reading a few reviews I am definitely buying this today.

Any beginner tips for starting out? I remember making a mess at the start of XCOM building the wrong things etc. What are the best upgrades etc. to go with first?

Build Resistance coms early on and staff it with engineers so that you can make contact and access the alien facility's
