X-Com 2 - Announced

Just started Xcom Enemy Within...again.

Would it be better just to start it with the Long War mod?

If you have played through Enemy Within before, i would highly recommend a Long War play through, with maybe the slightly shorter war option used. It can be a real cruel though, you find some outrageous monster packs mid to end game.

Thanks for the reply. I've not done a full play through, anything but.

I've just heard that the Long War is such a good mod, was wondering whether to start with it.

It can be very brutal in that if you try the traditional approach from a vanilla game, you're likely to get flattened. The ongoing air war needs a lot more research and money thrown at it, and while the ground game can get brutal later on, the earlier access to psionics and meld makes up for it, if you invest in it early on.

It's all the extra toys that make it for me, whole extra classes of weapons, sidearms and gadgets.

Really do read the readme though, so much has changed that you absolutely need to at least skim over it.

Thanks, I think I'll carry on with the vanilla for a while, and then delve into the Long War.

I hope they make this one a bit more open, similar to the old X-Com games. I love the new Enemy Unknown/Within but it did feel a bit like it was on rails compared to the old games.

Yes! That would be a huge step forward(backwards) for me. Even with the expansion I still felt like I was limited in the game.

Long War is brilliant, absolutely loved the variety of weapons, sawn off shotguns for secondary weapons that do massive damage but weigh you down so you can't move as much... SMGs for primary weapons that have little ammo in a clip and poor range but lets your dudes move much further, advanced assault rifles that are more accurate, longer range and um... Does it even have a drawback over the default assault rifle? O_o Can't remember it having one.

I never played Enemy Within... but I did play Enemy Unknown once. And after finishing it, never touched it ever again. It has to be much better for me to have any interest (though I did hear Enemy Within improved). The graphics look nice, but the big question... will they be downgraded for release?

Yea that was the down side to it. Compared to the classics the maps are tiny and static. Hopefully this one will improve on that.

TBH Terror from the Deep is still the best of the series :D

You're in a smallish minority :D

Resisting urge for tale about "my only mate who didn't like it is the one that struggles with thinking" but I'll leave it really well alone. :D

Not for everyone but it totally earned it's game of the year from various press back at release.

As a small tip - enemy within is available on android/iphone and plays about as well as you could ever wish for (it's a nigh on perfect copy of the console/PC versions). About the best game on the portables.

I re-visited it recently, and I think there was a lot of rose-tinting going on in my head. Finding the final terrified alien on those awful cruise ship maps was a massive pain.

No kidding.

Must have spent at least a couple of hours trying to find a single alien hiding in a toilet on a huge multi-floor map (game ran badly back then, was young!), after checking every single cabin on the map, I then had to check every single mini room within each cabin if I recall correctly.

After that I skipped every single cruise mission until I eventually failed the game because of it, never finished it purely for that reason. :D

Completed the original & apocalypse many times through on the harder difficulties - but those ship missions....

. The difficulty was also far more random (luck of the draw) & far less balanced as UFO Enemy unknown.

Saying that a modern remake of Terror from the deep would be very nice, the deep sea environment was very atmospheric & the music amazing.

It's ferking epic (for a phone, my S5 plays it perfectly) but the "never bored again" part will need a few additional extra battery based chargers :D It does kinda eat power.
