X-Com 2 - Announced

Would recommend going for the following missions at the early stages:

1. Defend Transmitter/Relay. This is the easiest at the lower levels at the start because the enemies similarly have low level weaponry, meaning it'll take longer for them to destroy it. There is also no round timer, meaning you can inch slowly towards it more safely. Always choose this one first if available.
2. Destroy Transmitter. This is the next one you should choose, as early fights give you enough time and rounds to reach the device and it is relatively easy enough to take down with basic weapon (3 hits, or 4 if you're unlucky). You'll most likely have a Grenadier at this point, save a Grenade to destroy the wall(s) nearest to you and the device and then shoot it down. At early levels, this gives you the most chance when there's a timer to work with.
3. Avoid the rest. At low levels, they will simply be too much on harder difficulties due to timer and amount of enemies involved at the same time.

As for council missions, since you don't get a choice, not much you can do about things. But if you see certain missions early on for harder difficulties, usually they'll be much easier. Best bet is to have a Ranger with Concealment available to scout ahead for you until you get gear to make runs easier:
1. Elimination missions. This is easily the best option since you have the option to eliminate the target with a sniper or at range. If the setup is good enough, then go in for the knockout option, but the likelihood is on harder difficulties that an outright kill is easier, permitting you to scarper with less chance of loss on your squad.
2. Escort missions. Still relatively easy on early runs since usually you can match the enemies relatively easily.
3. The Rescue and Escape are rubbish, because releasing a prisoner requires actions at lower level that'll put your squad at risk half the time with the timer in progress. Easily the one that carries the most risk at low level.

At latter points, the missions go along the following order of preference:
1. Destroy the Transmitter. This is now in preference to the "Defending the Device" mission because enemies have much more powerful weaponry, meaning they will more likely destroy the device before you get there to take aggro management of everyone. Not without taking much greater risk than needed.
2. Hack the Device. This mission you can now nuke your way through with your greater firepower, permitting faster progress to the target with much lower risk. Something you couldn't do at the lower levels.
3. Rest are largely risk heavy in comparison in my opinion.

Council Missions:
Escort or Elimination if you don't have Psionics. If you do have Psionics (at least 2) then any of them will be fine.

For Legendary or Legendary Ironman, once you get Psionics running, you can essentially run the game as you like. Currently 1 year and 6 months in my current run. Even managed to unlock the "Heroes of the Resistance" achievement at this difficulty with 3 Psionics and good placement of civilians. Working on making 6 Psi Operatives to take to the end. :)

Are you sure? I thought the default ADVENT troops have less health and your troops have more (compared to Commander+)...

Veteran is the 2nd easiest mode (see link above)... the 4 health basic ADVENT are from Commander difficulty and upwards

Commanders are dangerous but less so once you easily grenade the basic troopers, and Sectoids although they seem scary will use that zombie raise thing 80% of the time, and other psionic attacks which aren't immediate enough of a threat to stop you getting the troops out of the way

Yep, sorry I'm mixing it up with Legendary.

Ignore me, as veteran is a piece of cake :).

I meant earlier that Legendary Ironman is practically impossible.

6 Psi Ops absolutely wrecks face... I've got mine up and running (all British too :p) and they're all fully levelled apart from one who is getting there... All 6 of them in WAR suits as well :D With that many Psi Ops you can basically always guarantee all 6 of them will be able to use some sort of decent psionic attack every turn, so as long as you don't play totally stupidly you almost can't lose!

;) It's tough on Legend for sure

Not sure how much more I've got to go on my commander ironman palythrough. I've been neglecting the main story missions so i'm only just about to embark on my first mission acquired via the shadow chamber. Problem is I've completely run out of things to research! Just need to plow through the main plot line and get it finished, not lost a single soldier yet and its honestly been pretty easy.

Next playthrough will be legendary ironman, might even go for the 4 man squad achievement!

Did he definitely warp in? Sometimes they warp away over the bridge.

yeah I found him hes right back at the start of the map!!!!

I retreated after I had 3 andromeden 3 sectoid a gatekeeper warp in and I already had some vipers lurking around and spotted him hiding in one of the research rooms

What's everyone best and worse skills
Fir me gun slinger has to be these best. Get sniper to fire pistol a everyone often reduces hit points enough to kill, especially powerful mid game.

On the flip side swords are useless past very early game, ranger with run and gun is far better, swords never give enough damage and miss/dodge to often. Shotgun at dead blank range often has a higher hit percentage and especially if you add crit chance add on, stupid amounts of damage.

Always like shotgun assaults in the earlier games and rangers here are no different
Rapid fire shotguns oh yes :p (I do miss kinetic strike though)

Not sure on worst skill yet...

Swords are really good late game but only once you get reaper. Its a fantastic finishing ability if you have a bunch of low hp targets left that you need to get rid of.

Just finished commander difficulty .. Uninstalled it now ... I'm spending way too much time on it 100 hours exact since launch lol ( 2 playthroughs)

I can't get the combination of mods I want to work. Takes so long to try different combinations and no idea which ones are causing issues :(

Well that's the Commander Ironman run complete... I see what people were saying about the last mission being quite a step up (at least in terms of the volume of enemies)... Didn't find it too bad though in the end

Thoroughly enjoyed it and planning to play again on Legend with mods etc. but first a little break I think! Haven't really played much else since this came out :p

Finished it. Got a bit lucky at the end with the way I'd placed everyone but it worked. Not the best finale to a game but overall I thought it was a very good game. Will definitely be replaying it. It is so immerse once you get into it. Great fun.

Reached the last mission but can't even be bothered to complete. Nice game though. Cool action music and the way the camera pans around multiple overwatch shots its awesome (even if most of the time they miss).

Hoping for an LW mod but not sure it's happening now they're working for Firaxis churning out little mods.

Finished the game. Built psi labs very early so by mid way had 6 fully levelled psi soilders p. Was madness :D

I also double and triple checked that mind control (not insanity) does not last on that last mission it's the case. Unlike all other missions you lost the ability after 4-5 turns.
