X-Com 2 - Announced

Well I thought I would start playing it again after reading about the expansion.... I just can't get in to it. I loved EU to death, but can't enjoy this at all.

I don't have XCOM2 and I'm not buying anything this Steam sale so I'll let you know what I think of it tomorrow :) . Tbh I don't like the sound of is the timed missions which is one reason why I've put off taking the plunge despite also loving EW… but we'll see. I'll also take this opportunity to plug Phoenix Point ( https://www.fig.co/campaigns/phoenix-point ) again for those who feel XCOM2 was perhaps missing a bit of spirit.

A few mods improve the game such as delayed mission timers and user interface add ons.

I think the base game is really good despite not really following on from its predecessor.
The DLC are a nice addition (apart from the skin one which i never bothered with)

Long war 2 on rookie is good fun and challenging, so much better than vanilla, I am doing 40 missions a month with 8 teams of 8 and some in reserve.

Turn graze band down to 0, red fog on and it's a blast.

The new types of advent are good, however Ai still takes low percentage shots and hits a far bit, but you can counter with flamer throwers and incendiary Grenades which can completely lock down enemies.

Not to mention psi is very powerful now with low cool downs and then a Shinobi with grim reaper - that's 3 enemies dead per use right there.

Mission timers are all 16 turns or greater, some as much as 26. However reinforcements can arrive before countdown hits zero and they get more powerful as time progresses.

It's what xcom 2 should have been

Finally getting around to looking at this game - really enjoyed the original and expansion.

After a quick scan i've noticed that the timed missions can get annoying as there's a lot (don't mind the odd one) - also noticed that they can be disabled/perlonged(?) plus there are some useful interface addons.

Could anyone in the know advise me as to the best mods to add to make the gameplay more accessible for dipping in and out of - e.g. per-longing timed missions, better interface, speed up cut scenes etc...

Basically, a few of the best mods that may take frustration out of the game/interface/time when only playing casually.

If i get the time to play it properly - i'll play vanilla as i enjoyed the challenge of the first game - but i fear i may never get to play this game with the limited time i have.

Thanks.

Right, I'm about ten hours in and I'm finding it so much harder than the original! Even when reducing the difficulty...

Any tips? Particularly with the vipers/viper King.

I'm losing 2/3 members of my squad per mission if I don't keep re-loading my manual saves

A dead viper cannot kill you.
Shotgun at close range is generaly my goto for vipers.
If they have allready grabbed one fo your guys then use a flash nade to release them.
Dont group up.
Play aggresive.
Dont end a turn out of cover.
To be effective against the rulers you have to use the ruler weapons. Specificaly the frost bomb and the stun gun.

Your mod requests dont align with the type of gameplay you desire.
The timers are there to force you to take the offensive and play super aggresive. You can do some missions in only a handfull of turns.
If you remove the timers or even just extend them. The missions will take longer and be less accesible to someone with only a small amount of time to play.
The game has a couple of options to speed things up "zip mode" makes animations happen faster and there is also an option to remove some voice overs which speeds stuff up.
You can press ESC (maybe space) to skip 99% of the cut scenes, but a lot give info you will need to complete the missions on your first playthrough.

Don't reveal too much of the map in 1 hit.
Improve your kit asap.
Keep your ranger in stealth until you really need him/her.
Kill vipers quickly.
Flank whenever you can.
Cover your squad.
Get your sniper into a high position.

Thanks for the reply - i may have to put this game on the back burner for a while.

Tried playing it but I forget where i am or what i'm meant to be doing when i get chance to play it again. I suspect you're right re: the per-longed missions - they would contradict the problems i'm trying to address - other than removing the element altogether but that would ruin the essence of the game...

I had more time with the first release/s - thoroughly enjoyed them. Think I'll wait until i have the time i can play it properly (pipe dream - perhaps when the kids have graduated uni :/). I get the feeling, with my limited experience, that building up a veteran squad will be harder with this release whatever...

What I'd suggest for any of the alien rulers is to have items that can inflict damage over time like dragon rounds, acid bombs and incendiary bombs (or whatever they're called) as they can really screw them up because they move after each player action meaning the damage taken from the after effects and the after effects themselves could cause them not to flee and kill them in one mission (I've actually seen that happen already).

I've only got 4 blocks left on the Avatar warning system yet I seem unable to take up any missions that will allow me to reduce it :(

Any tips? I'm seriously finding this so much harder than the original...

Don't worry too much, I had that a couple times long as you haven't gone too far past it or ignored any missions that can reduce it then you shouldn't really ever fail.

Make sure you have got up links if no mission to do sit at main Base and advance you may get an optional one offered that will reduce it by 2 or 3 but there can be a consequence e.g aliens may have more armor etc depending on mission chosen

Expanding your reach is important; new territories are XCOM2's equivalent of satellites in the first game. It's worth noting too that the alien rulers don't start to spawn until you've taken the initial mission to find Dr. Valen. I tend to leave it alone, the rulers are a pain in the ass that require you to prep for every single mission as if they're going to appear.

Okay, so I have one of the "rescue a VIP missions" - turn limit of 12. Not a problem in itself but I've not got the problem of dealing with a Berserker King at the same time?!

Any tips, what should be my approach etc? He just seems to keep killing or knocking all my soldiers unconscious...

Theres a reason the steam rating for the Alien Hunters DLC is so bad. Putting enemies in a turn based game that break turn based rules just isn't fun. I wouldn't mind, but disabling the DLC from the menu doesn't actually stop the rulers appearing, just removes the intital triggering mission. Really poorly thought out piece of DLC.
